Week 1 Exercise 4, 5
4. Market
Trade is a necessity in any society. It would be impractical, if not impossible, for a single household to provide for all its needs from production to consumption. A market is a place for people to trade for what they need, either through barter or using currency, although there are a lot of different kinds of markets too. Think about a market or exchange that might exist in your setting -- this might also include websites or forms of e-trading.

Arrowhead Mall:
On April 10, 2010, a deadly shooting broke out at the Arrowhead Mall injuring at least five people and leaving one dead; witnesses say that the shooting was gang related. The USPS has part of it and other spots are being leased for office space. Used to have Sears and JC Penney

Farmers market: Open about 4 hours 8am-noon Wednesday and Saturday. Seasonal fruit and berries are always a hit too. Other best-selling items at markets are fresh herbs, garlic, mustard, horseradish, wasabi, ginger, and edible flowers. Ultimately, the best-selling farmers market items are homegrown or homemade.

Used clothes stores in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Clothes online available at www.poshmark.com and others

5. Venn Diagram

As an expansion to the exercises so far, work on identifying the main social groups you expect to touch on in your story.
Things to consider:
How do these groups intersect? What brings them into contact with each other?
How do these groups interact? Where? Why? How?
How do these groups (generally) perceive the others?
What are the power dynamics between the groups
Groups:
Farmers. Kids work on the farm and are in 4H clubs. Are looked down upon by others
Business Owners: problems since shooting in the city in 2010. Trying to revitalize business. Accountants, shop owners, insurance agents
Locals: People born and raised in Moskogee think they own the town and are invincible and impervious to authority
Police department: Several grew up in the town. They ran in circles with others in uniform, ie: firefighters, postal service
College students: Several groups within the student realm. Mostly "good" middle class kids

College students from out of state meet locals of their own age. They interact with students as well as the needs of everyone like food and clothing. Generally they are health conscious and hang out at the Farmer's Market. Story characters are college students. Local politics and good old boy mentality causes friction. One college professor plays a key role.
