Proverbs 12:9

Proverbs 12:9 says "He that is despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread."

What do you suppose the author means by this?

If I take this in a context of time, such as the time we live in today, often people are despised for their monetary or political office or social standing; movie stars, etc. They have the money to hire servants to do the everyday cooking, cleaning, driving, child care. They may be despised by people lower on the income scale.

It’s easier to think you may have a better standing in life without money. Even though you can’t eat well or don’t have the cash to feed your family well.

It’s an interesting thought because watching news broadcasts all year, a point has been made, that people in lines to receive food baskets are as likely to be people who always had money to take care of all their needs; as people who never had enough cash to keep up with feeding families or rent. Shutting down the country has revealed some interesting ideas about economic needs. Also, it has revealed the way the economy can fail quickly for anyone.
