Echoes of Creation
Echoes of Creation

I

I sing of silence;
of the unformed silence before the Word was spoken;
before its letters were combined
and linked
inseparately to the deed.

This is the song of precreation,
of unformed, unchaotic, inexpressive, lonely nonexistence.

This is the soul rending silence
that preceded the primordial atom;
that preceded God's spoken invocation,
which generated creation's melody.

God--
the uncreated, the unknowable, the preexistent--
pondered the lonely silence,
pondered the nothingness of precreation;
pondered the darkness of nonexistence;
God breathed his spirit into the darkness,
united the B and the E,
and spoke the Word.

BE shattered the silence,
condensed the primordial atom out of nothingness,
and reverberated through the darkness.

II

BE reverberated through the darkness,
penetrated the primordial atom
generating energy-matter.

Light scattered the darkness,
chaos intoned
the birth pangs of creation,
nanoseconds passed into seconds,
subatomic particles congregated into atoms.

One Word reverberated
through the expanding universe,
its echoes merging;
reverberating;
becoming notes,
chords,
melodies,
sonances,
refrains,
harmonies,
and dissonances.

III

One breath expanded
fanning the light of existence;
pushing before it sparks of matter,
splinters of energy,
gas, dust, and the interstellar medium.
