D1 - Identity Crisis - Who Are You?
So, do you often talk to yourself like this?

Oh yes, all the time. Well, you'd know that of course.

[Nodding sagely]

Yes, yes, I would. Well, who better eh? Who better?

So then, this prompt. What do you think?

Have I ever questioned myself over a decision?

That's the one.

I think it very likely.

[Nods parsley]

Ah yes, but can you think of a specific instance? And preferably one that has potential for conversion to some amusing rambling?

Offhand?

Yes!

How about the decision to take on this challenge?

Too obvious, and besides that isn't true.

[Nods rosemarily]

No you're right...

What about that time?

Which time would that be then?

[Nods thymely]

You remember surely?

Remind me?

This is in danger of getting a bit recursive, if you know what I mean.

Yes, yes of course I know because...

It is a hazard when you start talking to yourself.

Hard to say anything that isn't completely predictable.

Unless you're good at that train of consciousness stuff.

And we are good at that aren't we?

Yes, I'd say so.

Making stuff up as we go along.

I feel as though we've strayed off topic somewhat though.

You're right, (of course).

I've thought of one?

Brilliant, yes, ripe for the ridiculing.

Well I do come out of it looking like a pillock, so yes I would say so.

There was this woman.

In a nightclub.

Yes, in a nightclub, and she was utterly gorgeous.

This is going back a bit isn't it?

There's nothing in the prompt about a recent decision.

True, sorry. Do go on.

I know I go on a bit.

I mean get back to the decision.

Oh right, yes. Of course. There was this gorgeous woman at a night club, probably about my age, which was likely about 19 or 20.

Coo, we are going back a bit aren't we.

And as you probably remember we, that is I was very gauche about women. I had simply no clue.

Correct, and now you know all there is to know, you're past it.

There is no need to be quite so personal, this reflects upon you too you know.

Sorry, yes, do go on.

So I looked at her furtively, all night. Only had eyes for her. Worked myself up to speak to her.

And you did.

I did. I walked up to her and told her that I thought she was incredibly beautiful.

And then you left the club.

Yep. Walked out of there before she had any chance to respond.

This was classic you.

It was. There was that time when I gave a checkout girl in a shop a huge bunch of freshly bought, (for her), flowers, because she was beautiful. Told her so and left. Kind of signature move there.

You're right, you are a pillock.

You said it. Anyway, where was I? Oh yes.

So a few weeks later, we are at the same nightclub.

And we see the woman.

We do.

The club was a lot livelier that time, lots more people there, so I didn't see her immediately. But when I do, I can see that she was at least tipsy, if not drunk.

Drunk I think.

Yes, I think she was probably drunk.

And she saw you.

She did. She looked over, and I knew that she recognised me. And I saw,

Or thought you saw.

I was pretty sure, she looked imploringly at me.

So what did you do?

I left.

Again.

As you say, again.

Why?

Well this is the bit I question now. I think it was partly because I was still scared of approaching her.

A large 'partly' of it to be honest.

There was also the feeling that it wouldn't be right to take advantage of her being drunk.

Not that you would have.

No. I wouldn't. My conscience makes Jiminy Cricket look like an amateur.

So you left, again.

And have always regretted it, and wondered about her, because I have a long memory.

Told you.

Pillock.

Agreed.
