Day 18: Cultural Settings

Story opens in 1929. Britain holds elections where women under 30 can vote for the first time, a Labour Government is formed. German airship, the Graf Zepplin flies around the world in 21 days.

1929 saw the beginning of the Great Depression, and this saw the end of the flapper era, of which Philomena is an exponent, though it would be fair to imagine that there wasn't an immediate cessation . There is a generation gap of attitudes, with the older members of society in general disapproving of the looks and permissive attitudes of the younger generation.
