Summer Music - Week 25
The hum of gas-driven machines,
Whirring blades that trimmed the green.
Cicadas that appeared from year to year,
Drilling their songs into every ear.
The boys of summer we cheered to win,
Radios intoning their names like hymns,
Excitedly singing heroic melodies,
Conigliaro, Petrocelli, Yastrzemski.
The sounds of kickball played in the street,
Or the cries of “olly olly oxen free”.
I miss them all, to tell the truth.
The musical summers of my youth.
