How not to Pick up a girl
So today I'm sitting in the student lounge at school working on homework, and some guy sits down next to me. I've got my headphones in and I'm pretty focused on my work.

He leans over and taps me on the shoulder, so I take my headphones out and look over at him.
"Hi, I'm [name omitted]." He says and reaches his hand out to shake mine.
I'm pretty creeped out at this point. I do the polite thing and shake his hand. "Nice to meet you, I'm Kim." I'm hoping he's going to ask me to take a survey or something for him, but no.

"So what year are you?" He asks.
It's like, I'm sitting there obviously hard at work and he decides to just come and talk to me. There were plenty of people sitting around reading novels, surfing the web, and doing other time-passing activities. And yet he chose to speak to me.
"Junior." I replied. At this point I wasn't trying to be overly polite. If he had something he needed to talk to me about, that's fine. But if he's just trying to meet a girl then go talk to one who's not studying.
"That's cool, I'm a sophomore."

Silence.

"So, what's your major?"
"Business Management."
"That's cool. I'm doing my generals now, but then I'm going into engineering."
"Ahh."

Silence.

At this point I just wanted to be free, so I told a little lie about my due dates, "Well, my homework here is due in an hour and I really need to get it done."
"Oh that's cool."

Silence.

"So, what class is it for?" Mr. clueless could not take a hint.
"Managerial Accounting."
"Oh that's cool. Is it fun?"

Is it fun? It's homework. Moreso, it's accounting homework. No it's not fun.

"Not really, it's homework." I gave a half-hearted half smile. He laughed way too hard at my statement before I reiterated, "But I really need to work on it, so..." I hoped that would get the point across.
"Oh that's cool. I'll leave you alone then. You think I could get your number before I go? Maybe we could continue our conversation later?"

My initial reaction was to tell him I had a boyfriend, cause I didn't really want to befriend this impeding, awkward guy. But I didn't want to start stacking lies on top of each other in case for some reason I ever had to talk to him again. I also didn't want to give him a fake phone number in case we ever did end up talking again. So I just gave him my number with the intent of screening his calls.

He's called me twice already today, both calls I didn't answer. Would it have been better just to say right off the bat that I wasn't really interested? I hate to be mean like that, but now I feel like an awkward conversation has gotten stretched out to a much more awkward situation.

Argh.

The thing is, he's fairly good looking, he just has a boring personality.
Guys, if you are looking to swoon a girl off her feet, then do not:
1. Introduce yourself without any reason
2. Ask endless questions about me (why should I start telling you my life story to a stranger?)
3. Start babbling on about yourself. Nothing is more annoying than someone who goes on about their job, classes, friends, favorite toothpaste, etc.

If you really want to swoon a girl, there's really just one rule:
1. BE INTERESTING

If Mr. Clueless had something interesting to say I would not have minded talking to him. Instead he sputtered out questions at me as if it were a job interview. Tell me a funny story, give me a reason why you're different from all the other schmo's out there. I'm not going to date you just because I know what your major is.

This sounds a bit mean-spirited, and it's not meant to be. It's just that this is not the first time a guy has awkwardly tried to approach me, and it really creates an awkward situation that I just want to run away from.
