This is a continuation of my blogging here at WdC

This will be a blog for my writing, maybe with (too much) personal thrown in. I am hoping it will be a little more interactive, with me answering questions, helping out and whatnot. If it falls this year (2024), then I may stop the whole blogging thing, but that's all a "wait and see" scenario.

As a reader, my brain just skips over descriptions. They're like ads to me: obstacles that get in the way of what I'm there for. Occasionally, I'll come across a description that speaks to me, but it's rare, and I don't recall any that used "all the senses" (and I agree there are many more than five) without seeming contrived.

Clicked and read them all. They were all great and I am most thankful for the list of horrible holiday movies. I found a couple I can recommend to my brother as payback for making me watch "The Lobster".

I've railed on some of these before. Like "theory" and "evolution." And why "evolution is only a theory" is like saying "gravity is only a theory."

Common sense usually isn't, and facts are subject to change, but primacy bias is a really tough thing to overcome.

Dairy may be great for children, not so great for adults (my sister was lactose intolerant since childhood).

Processed dairy... like cheese... has its uses. Thailand has fresh local food year round. Montana and areas of extreme weather or supply chain issues do not and need preserved staples (pickled, sugared, salted, dried). Many cheeses keep well.

Evolution however... may I add that just because I don't have offspring doesn't mean I haven't contributed to the next generation (or change).

Theory (some of which evolve over time)... and traditions (some of which evolve over time). Ignorance, however, doesn't evolve without some sort of experience or education.

Brains... how much is consciously being used may not be 100%. I'm sitting so my sense of 'balance' may be sleeping in the background. However, it better wake up when I stand up! Had issues with numbness yesterday (not fun).

Ancient knowledge and ancient 'knowledge' need to be rethought. The Earth evolves, so do humans. Well, some do. People still stuck in Leviticus... seems to be an American issue.

Kåre เลียม Enga - As I said in the post, if the message is a part of the story and integrated all the way through, it's fine. It's when you get these diatribes in the middle of something where they don't belong or don't fit that I was having a go at.

Narnia being Christian allegory is fine. I mean, I never liked the books (I only read 3), so whatever.

It's the same with setting. There's no need to dump everything on the first page. Or describing the main character in minute details ad nauseum.

Is Narnia Christian? If it's a great story well told, does it matter?

IMO Anne McCaffrey does this well with the parallel Dragonriders of Pern and Harper Hall trilogies. Adults-with-dragons; youth with fire-dragons. Memorable world building. Wonderful characters.

Kudzu the plant... only a curse for those who don't know its uses: forage, food, fiber.

🐕GeminiGem🎁 - I chose Grease because it is so egregious and goes against everything Sandy had demonstrated up to that point. Dirty Dancing was set a few years later (early 60s), and, though Baby changes, it is gradual and is more a change of growing up, being true to herself. So, I think the time period can be used effectively without being so demeaning. As I see it.

I agree that when a woman changes herself to attract a man shows misogyny and is annoying...but...using the movie Grease as an example it an interesting choice. Yes, the lead female changes her appearance to appeal to the male. I think it was more because of peer pressure, but the peer pressure happened because of the pervasive misogyny of the peers. Interestingly, the male character does the exact same thing for the same reasons.

The movie is set in the 1950's, a time where the misogyny we see now is even waaaay worse. So, here is a thought. If you are writing about a time period like that and are showing social interactions of the characters, something like the pervasive misogyny is going to be true to the time and place the story takes place. Does that excuse it? No, of course not, but having present-day sensibilities in an era like that would make the story seem really off.

External Writerings XII

It's been a while, but the blog has just taken a back seat. I have a few more posts ready to go, but to start the year, let's finish last year!
Here's the columns I wrote in December!

Christmas movies people consider terrible but I think are fun... and the worst movie ever made.

Review of the biggest selling Christmas album ever.

Review of the Psychic Fair.

Take a Christmas carol and turn it into a modern piece of music. Here's some examples.

And some songs about a certain fellow in red with a slight weight issue.

And, finally, the good albums from the last quarter of 2024.
