Poem:

IT'S HER I USED TO KNOW

From the shadows I watch
As she turns the corner,
Another drink of scotch,
Cross the street to warn her,
Alone she should not walk,
I offer company
If it’s only to talk,
That’s all it has to be.
~
A breeze rustles her hair,
Brown with a copper glow,
Upon her face I stare,
Her eyes on me bestow
A feeling I’ve not felt,
Since very long ago.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“In three words, I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life. It goes on." ~Robert Frost

He was speaking to journalist Ray Josephs In 1954 on his 80th birthday.

Frost's words in context: "In all the confusions of today, with all our troubles . . . with politicians and people slinging the word fear around, all of us become discouraged . . . tempted to say this is the end, the finish. But life — it goes on. It always has. It always will. Don’t forget that.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY: Anne Frank

"Human greatness does not lie in wealth or power, but in character and goodness. People are just people, and all people have faults and shortcomings, but all of us are born with a basic goodness." ~Annalies Marie Frank aka Anne Frank

A couple of things I learned about Anne Frank. Her first name is Annalies. She was given the diary she later became famous for on her 13th birthday. Of the 8 people who lived hidden, 7 people died. She and her sister Margot died of typhus fever in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in February or March 1945, the exact date is unknown. The camp was liberated 15 Apr 1945.
Here is her last diary entry 1 Aug 1944:
" As I've told you many times, I'm split in two. One side contains my exuberant cheerfulness, my flippancy, my joy in life and, above all, my ability to appreciate the lighter side of things."

Weeping Willow

Noonday arrives and
goes, My Dearest
Branches sway lazily
The heat is oppressive,
My Love,
under the willow tree
under the willow tree

I sit here waiting, My
Dearest,
Thirsting for your
amorous affection
images I see before me,
My Love,
under the willow tree

The minutes are fleeting, My Dearest
Stars coalescing in
The heavens
Moonbeams caress
me, My Love,
under the willow tree

Where are you, My
Dearest,
Shall I return whence
I came
came to the valley to
wait for you
under the willow tree
under the willow tree

Oh
under the willow tree
Oh
under the willow tree

Did you forget our
rendezvous, My
Dearest,
Four years to the day
our romance
blossomed, My Love,
under the willow tree

I waited for decades
My Dearest,
The willow’s life is
near death
I long to see your face,
My Love,
under the willow tree

Noonday arrives and
goes, My Dearest,
Branches sway lazily
The heat is oppressive,
My Love,
under the willow tree
under the willow tree

under the willow tree
under the willow tree

Moved 7/30/24:
Sleep’s Drama

Sleep pulls me into the story and
gives me a script, commanding me
to go there, to say this and then that,
expecting that I be unsurprised when
the guy checking my groceries
becomes a sheep and begins to eat
the head of lettuce I so carefully chose
from the produce department.

I’m transported from one setting to
another, both familiar and unknown.
Scene by scene, I follow, without
question, the nebulous plot hatched
in Sleep’s labyrinth- like, playwright mind.
The theatrics are all so logically illogical.

The play goes on and on as I portray
all the characters. I am the entire
cast, you see - Aunt Dora, the cat,
a grouchy baby, some crazy dude
wearing a cowboy hat, that sheep.

At last, Sleep itself tires and pushes
me aside, taking a deep bow for its
executorship. As the curtains close, I
yawn and stretch, moving groggily into
another bizarre dimension: Reality.

Poem posted on WWW through 6/23/24 by WdC member Innerlight:
The Rain has Spoken

A somber melody in the air,
The weight of absence, a silent burden I bear.
Light rain taps gently on the windowpane,
Each drop a tear, a memory’s refrain.

I lie down to sleep, seeking solace in dreams,
Where their laughter echoes, and love redeems.
Yet how can I forget the contours of their face,
The warmth of shared moments, time cannot erase.

I yearn to laugh, to defy sorrow’s grip,
To dance on the edge, where joy and grief slip.
And when tears fall, unbidden and free,
I embrace the ache, for it binds them to me.

In the quiet hours, I sit and mourn,
Lighting candles, tracing memories worn.
Their stories etched deep, woven into my soul,
A labyrinth of emotions, where healing takes its toll.

Remembering becomes my sacred task,
Their essence alive in every breath I ask.
I choose to smile, a gentle rebellion,
For they live on in me, defying oblivion.

With gratitude, I give thanks for their grace,
The love we shared, the moments we embrace.
And as I step outside, the rain kisses my skin,
I go for a walk, their presence within.
