This is an immigrant joke I heard from my father-in-law. Presumably it's an old one that Jews told about themselves.
A greenhorn from the old country arrived in New York not knowing a word of English. When he found a factory job he had a little money. At lunchtime he would follow the other workers out to a nearby cafeteria and stand in line. When it was nearing his turn to order he heard the guy in front of him say "apple pie and coffee" so he ordered apple pie and coffee. Every day for a week he had apple pie and coffee for lunch.
After a week he was ready to try something new. The guy in front of him ordered "a pastrami sandwich with a pickle". So he ordered a pastrami sandwich with a pickle. "Bulkie roll or rye?" the worker behind the counter asked.
The confused newcomer answered, "Apple pie and coffee."
