Re: Preserving Review Totals
The review recognitions acknowledge "current" activity. From the "?" help, we do explain it as:

Review Recognitions are awarded to members in the ratio of 1 recognition point for every 100 current reviews. "Current reviews" are any reviews attached to items currently on Writing.Com. Only one review per item will count towards a member's review recognitions. When an item is removed from Writing.Com, the reviews associated to it are also removed.

This system affects all members equally throughout the site and it helps to ensure that community recognitions as it relates to reviewing are "current".

While we may in the future provide members with a personal and private "counter" of reviews given, if we were to count reviews of deleted items, we'd open the system up to cheating that would essientally make everyone's numbers completely worthless... and that wouldn't be any fun for anyone.

For example(s)...

If reviews of deleted items were to affect the recognition "forever", a group of friends could easily and endlessly create "fake" items, send "fake" reviews to each other, then delete the reviewed items. Since the items deleted would not affect a member's portfolio count, members who are specifically interested in increasing their community recognition numbers would have no problem gaming the system.

This type of system would also encourage the creating of "fake accounts" that could be reviewed and then deleted... making out policing of 2ndary accounts an even more daunting task then it is currently.

On the other hand... Member who are reviewing for the oodles of experience they gain by giving meaningful feedback, as well as the support and assistance that reviewing provides to fellow authors looking to improve, get far more than a numerical value from their reviewing.

Yes, we do understand that some people are a bit fixated on the numerical values they receive for reviewing and yes, we have heard at least a handful of complaints that the number can decrease. We hope the future addition of a personal counter will help these members who are reviewing for the numbers with this.

In the meantime, if and when you hear someone having trouble over the number, it would be a big help to the community if you would remind them, as I do, of the extreme good that comes from reviewing, which far outweighs a number.

You can also remind them that members who make the top 100 public reviewers list each month are rewarded with a Merit Badge for reviewing. This merit badge does increase a member's community recognition and Merit Badges do not ever go away.

If they still feel the number is overly important, then it pays to discuss why that is and whether or not the number would be important if the system allowed anyone to easily cheat and grow their number without really reviewing anything. Most people whom I discuss this with acknowledge that having a fair system that is more difficult to cheat helps to better provide a numerical representation of everyone's participation within the community. Of course, not everyone will agree with anything, but... *Smile*

Best wishes and Merry xmas,
