If you were to use, oh, say tennis for example , it wouldn't have to take place during a Grand Slam, but the old pro should have some success at winning Grand Slams (to establish the fact that they're an accomplished old pro). As opposed to, say, jogging, where there's no real measurement of a person's success or failure.
In other words, the old pro should have won plenty of championships, although he or she doesn't necessarily have to be playing in one for your story.
