No, it doesn't have to be set during the championship... there just needs to be some kind of ultimate prize so that the old pro has a distinct set of accomplishments. If you were to use, oh, say tennis for example , it wouldn't have to take place during a Grand Slam, but the old pro should have some success at winning Grand Slams (to establish the fact that they're an accomplished old pro). As opposed to, say, jogging, where there's no real measurement of a person's success or failure.
In other words, the old pro should have won plenty of championships, although he or she doesn't necessarily have to be playing in one for your story.
