I have found that I don't control my characters, I document them.

Sure, I drop them into the most insufferable situations as possible, but it is they that work themselves out of the jam. And yes, I have made some situations that it was impossible for them to reasonably get out of and have to start over, but they wander all over the place and I don't try and control them. I just write about the settings that surrounds them (I found that out working Day 30: Settings List)
