Hey Lassie,
I like to think that character conflict can go something vs. something. They have two things they're fighting against.
Of course, it can be more complicated and less black and white than it may seem if it's too much of an absolute.
For example, my character, Lynkida struggles between embracing her abilities to shapeshift and the stigma around shapeshifting.
This works for my story for three reasons:
1. It gives me an idea of what character traits she has.
2. I tie it into the theme of
Into a Wolf.
3. When you use it to tie it to the theme, it can do a nice job of cementing the plot, theme, and character together.
So try asking where both your theme and plot are headed, and figure out a character struggle that would go with these two things.
Of course, your character can have more than one set of struggles, but I consider them to be the ones I will address in the novel.
Because even after a life-altering journey, your character should still have flaws, questions, and things which they struggle with.
Let me know if you have any questions,
Kerri
