================================================= PROMPT September 5, 2020 Imagine you have a superpower of your choice. However, no one knows about it! What does your superpower enable you to do? Do you confide in anyone? What happens? ================================================= My thoughts on Supernatural Powers Superpower as a noun is generally known to denote a powerful and influential nation. In this prompt it implies some extraordinary capability you have. I mean it’s supernatural power we are speaking about here. Super power denotes here as such. Such powers encompass a vast dimension. It’s not relevant to enlist them here and I don’t venture to do it either. Telepathy is one such power I commonly heard of. To quote Cambridge dictionary , it is “the ability to know what is in someone else's mind, or to communicate with someone mentally, without using words or other physical signals” Yes if I had such a power, in all probability, I would keep it myself, would not divulge to others. The fact, no one knows about it gives me a weapon or a tool to use it to my advantage, undoubtedly! Who knows if some such power exists behind many practices like sorcery, occult. It’s a matter of conjecture to say what I would do. There are instances where such powers are used to harm others as well as to heal the pains and illness to which there are no known scientific cure. Recently I came across an instance I felt that some someone close to me was in distress and met with an accident .I was restless, who could it be? , trying to check with friends if they were safe and nothing untoward happened to them giving the reason for my query. A few hours later I got a message another friend met with an accident far away across the globe. I made out the accident has taken place exactly at the very instant, when I felt uneasy that someone close to me met with an accident. I did not have any clue of any sort to guess the accident, it was unexplainable why I got it in my mind. Could it be an instance of Telepathy? Another experience I had way back in 1970’s. This is about the devastating earthquake near Koyna dam in Maharastra, India. The earthquake happened early in the morning around 6 O’clock. A sudden uproar of street dogs, and birds attracted my attention, trying to find why it happened. Birds started flying helter-skelter, dogs moaning loud, it was a terrific scene. Mild humming sound went across me followed by a big shake of everything around, doors and windows rattled, walls got cracked, people around ran out in panic. A few minutes later there was a breaking news over Radio stating the incidence of powerful earthquake. I was curious, could the birds and dogs that made the uproar sense the earthquake in advance? Later I read literature of such powers of animals! Many a supernatural capabilities have been scientifically deciphered and explained subsequently attributing them to known laws of nature. “Historically, supernatural powers have been invoked to explain phenomena as diverse as lightning, seasons, and the human senses, which today are understood scientifically”wikipedia.org explains. Therefore explanation of such supernatural capabilities under the known laws of nature scientifically that matters. As science advances, as our understanding of nature’s laws improves many of supernatural powers also explained and they are no more supernatural. The line of demarcation between supernatural and natural powers is dependent on the time when it is considered. It doesn’t mean all supernatural powers are real and could one day find scientific explanation. Many false claims are busted, many a manipulated pseudo claims fizzle out tests of scientific investigation. Opinions differ but I feel it is advisable to put such powers into practical use as long as there are no harmful results and where scientific knowledge fails to address such needs. Who knows the experience of such deployment may lead to scientific explanation? Word Count: 614 |
