Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Dresden Files: Molly Carpenter
Sorry, I only found this by accident; tag us if you want to catch our attention! *Smile*

So, I write predominantly horror, with a chunk of fantasy (S&S generally, though some high, and more and more urban), science fiction, humour... and my short stories cover many other genres as well. Not sure what that has to do with beta readers, but there you go.

So, I have 3 sources for beta readers.

My daughter is my beta reader for my YA work. She is also my harshest beta reader. But she has helped me incredibly.

My best-selling book (Invasive Species, AM Ink, 2022) was beta-read by a woman I met at the gym who had similar taste in books to me. I think that is a good thing to look at - similar taste in books to you, the writer.

And my current beta readers are librarians, three of the ladies at the library where I go to Internet. These are people I know, and who I also know read extensively. It seems to go with the territory, at least in Australia, for librarians that they are readers as well. I also have a mate who is a gay guy and he reads with an eye just for gay characters and portrayals. My indigenous reader is no longer available, so I need to find a new one there.

The following people have not worked: my sister, my ex when she was still my wife, close friends, people who liked a published book and just want to read an unpublished one... It's taken me years to get to where I am with my betas.

tl;dr: If you're looking for beta readers - someone you trust, someone who likes the same books as you, someone who is an avid reader, and someone who is not just doing it as a fan or out of friendship/ relative obligation.

Hope that helps.
