Chapter #3
a duty to follow
by: katie
This is your father's ship you remember. You have a duty to fulfill. Run and hide, ridiculous! A true Sherwood would never do so. You push your doubts aside and hold your head up, staring into the wind, facing the oncoming ship.
The ship stops about forty feet distant. A cannon is set off, vibrating the air, causing your heart to beat violently. You realize from where you are standing in the shadow of the cabin, and the position of the pirate vessel, you are not easily seen and your ship appears deserted. Perhaps they will believe the entire crew has suffered some disease you think, but quickly brush that thought aside.
Keeping to the shadows, you slip down to the captain's quarters where Thomas and the captain and talking in angry tones debating what is to be done. You hesitate outside the door a moment and enter without knocking.
They stop at your appearance. You've never come to the captain's quarters uninvited before.
"What do they want?" you ask.
"Right now, they are waiting for someone to appear up top," the captain replied with the dignity due to the daughter of the ship's owner. "Thomas here wants to attack now, while they are unprepared, which is folly. They'd cut us to piece in minutes."
"There's always a chance," Thomas spoke up.
"Pirate ships are well armed, always", you speak up attempting to speak with authority. "We will go speak with them and seek their demands."
Thomas and the captain look at you. "I'll follow in a minute," the captain says gruffly after a pause. "Wait in the hall."
As you close the door you hear the concersation resume with a different topic.
"You can't mean to let her go with you!", you hear Thomas cry greatly agitated.
"Having her up there may be the only card we have, of course, I'll let her go."
You realize the captain is not thinking at all of your safety, or where you position should have placed you- firmly under guard- but is only thinking of his survival. That's alright, you tell yourself, you have the same thing in mind, but perhaps going up with the captain in full light isn't the best idea.
