"I will stay here and wait for help," Goldilocks decided, "because that's what mummy and daddy always said I should do if I get lost."
When Goldilocks thought "help", she thought "a responsible adult who can guide me to safety". She did not think "tiny turtles crawling over me and poking me with toothpicks". Unfortunately for the little girl, what happened next involved neither adults nor safety. As the green, shell-clad creatures swarmed over her, she cried and screamed. It never occurred to her that she could stand up and run away, thereby shaking most of the reptiles off in the process, because her parents had taught her to be helpless. "No respectable man likes a woman who can get out of her own messes," they told her. "If you ever want to get married, look pretty and know how to scream."
Despite her general ineptness, this was not the end of the story for Goldilocks. As she succumbed to the wrath of the turtles, a noise came from the woods. The turtles froze, toothpicks poised in midair, then scattered, leaving the girl alone. She isn't sure what to do.
