The snake smells you.

Your heart rate increases. The python tastes the air and detects your warm-blooded scent. It stops and turns its head towards you. If you stay where you are, the python is sure to eat you.
You could try and run towards the head, where it can't get you. Or you could grab onto the tail. Then, if it tries to bite you, you can let go and it will bite its own tail. Or you could just make a run for it and hope that the snake loses you in the tangle of plants and rocks.
