Chapter #4

The Man and the Giant

    by: Unknown
At 21 years old, Victor was more or less an adult bear, which in normal circumstances would make him over eight feet tall and an imposing sight to anyone. His body was thick with musculature, although there was that ever present bear fat that just made them all the bulkier. His fur was thick as well; in fact, everything about bears seemed to be designed to make them seem as big as possible.

The hyper-gigantia had only helped in that department. At sixteen feet, he was now twice the average adult bear height, and now bigger than any recorded bear before the outbreak of this... disease? Mutation? Evolution? Each word held a connotation that someone would disagree with, and none quite fit whatever was going on. It wasn't a disease, as there was no truly negative impact on the body. It wasn't a mutation, since most of the cases had never been in the same place before, and no radiation beyond normal levels were present in any of the macros. It wasn't evolution, at least as far as he could tell, because he'd never heard of a species suddenly growing to a hundred times their previous height before. Whatever the proper term might be, that kind of speculation would wait for later. After all, this was his first time actually meeting someone with the... condition. Yes, that would be an acceptable word for now, the weasel thought to himself.

He had studied cases like these for months, learning all that was known about hyper-gigantia. He knew the average growth rate for various progressions of the condition, he knew the more famous cases, he knew that there was no difference in the way males and females were affected, though males seemed to be more likely to become macros, at a rate of nearly four boys to one girl. His mathematical proficiency came in great handy, calculating size differences, heights, weights, and comparisons to objects in real life in order to accurately assess needs and statistics of macros. He'd been a valuable resource for those working in the field, and now he was finally getting his own turn. The news had come in just a couple days ago, and he had fervently studied: copying all his research notes and studies to flash drives to bring with him, printing off charts of how Victor's growth would likely develop, making arrangements with food suppliers in the area, and even bringing along a program he'd designed that rendered two 3-D models of different heights, so he could make visual comparisons without needing to be in person. And yet, despite all that preparation, nothing prepared him for the enormous bear shaking his hand.

At two and a half times his size, Victor's hand engulfed his, swallowing it in a mass of soft yet leathery pads and coarse yet smooth and comfortable dark brown fur. William looked down and saw only Victor's hand in a ball, his own hand vanished from sight within the macro's grip. He could almost feel the delicacy of the grip that he was applying, so incredibly powerful and yet being gentle enough to just hold the weasel's hand. And yet, in that instant, William could sense the strength that this macro held, at only twice his original height. He shivered slightly, a little more nervous than before.

"It's nice to meet you, Dr. Bauer, sir. I'll do my best to answer your questions," the giant said, nodding his head as he spoke. His voice, like the rest of him, was in the final stages of growing up but still amplified. It was deep, loud, and definitively masculine. His eyes, crystalline and green, held sadness with a trace of fear, as expected from someone who wakes up to find themselves turning into a giant. His titanic body was bare except for a modestly placed blanket across his lap; the custom designed clothes would arrive in a day, and in the meanwhile Victor would have to make do with makeshift loincloths. William took the moment to look him over, noting the impressive musculature and thick fur all over the grizzly body. Even if he wasn't a giant, the 21-year-old would have still been built like a tank and an incredible sight to see.

The weasel tried not to think about how unbelievably attractive Victor was and turned to his pad, his nervous musk thick in the air as he cleared his throat and started asking the basic questions. Did you eat anything odd? Do you feel sick or anything during the growth spurts? How many growth spurts have you experienced so far? Did you ever have contact with this man, Fenn Richards? They all seemed silly questions, little more than far reaches that had been used for the first hundred cases or so and now were basically meaningless. Still, protocol was protocol.

Victor seemed like a nice guy. He spoke politely, never interrupted, always answered directly and explained when necessary. There was a distinctly sad tone to his voice; a few friends had decided to leave him alone, and he was isolated from a lot of people because of his condition. It was clear that he considered himself a freak and just wanted to get back to normal again. A common opinion, but William hoped he'd be able to change the bear's mind eventually.

Soon, William folded his pad and clicked his pen shut, nodding thoughtfully as he tapped the paper. "Alright, well, I don't want to keep you too long for these first couple of sessions. We'll ease into longer and longer sessions together as your hyper-gigantia develops. Now, I want you to know that although I am here to observe and assist, you should consider me more as a friend than a caretaker. I have to go for now, but I suggest looking for work at a construction or demolition company. People with your condition are highly valued, and you're the only case for a few hundred miles in any direction, so you'll be considered very important by them."

The mother returned and the three of them spoke for a while, eventually settling on having William come back in a couple of days to have another session with Victor. "You have a nice day, ma'am," he said, kissing her hand again and bowing. Then he turned back to the giant and smiled. His lips parted to speak, and then he noticed for the first time a growing musk in the air besides his own. He looked ever so slightly down and saw the large bulge in the blanket on the bear's lap; his cheeks flustered and he hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Victor, I know it may seem bad right now, but your condition is what you make it to be. I'll see you in a couple of days."

The bear nodded, the slightest hint of a blush on his cheeks as he shifted his legs a little. "See you later, Dr. Bauer, sir."

"Please, call me William."
