Transporting the Key's essence (which transformed into Dawn) to the beginning of the Third Millennium the monks, being in such a desperate rush, neglected to fully stabilize Dawn's body in its current form. Being struck by the energy beam activated the EMERGENCY TRANSFORMATION element in her seemingly human heart. Designed for when the Key, "Dawn's body" was suddenly under attack by demonic energy, seconds after entering a place where she was alone, Dawn would transform into the image of the first female mammalian form that she focused on in her mind.
So depending on your point of view, it was either a good thing OR a bad thing that like many pre-teen American girls, Dawn had really,REALLY liked Hello Kitty. She had a fairly large collection of Hello Kitty and other stuffed animals sitting in the attic. Buffy had made her box them up shortly after their mother died. Buffy told Dawn, "You're now too old for such things and YOU'RE putting them ALL" in the attic. Which only served to further the strain between the sisters. Returning home exhausted, when Dawn fell asleep the only thing going through her head was how much she wished she could again be with her collection of stuffed animals, especially Hello Kitty and her other BIG CAT dolls.
When she fell asleep that night Dawn's desire manifested itself, transforming Dawn into an anatomically correct, full sized copy of her favorite stuffed Siberian Tiger doll. Of course, since Dawn at that time, still didn't know she was "a Key", she had absolutely no clue how to change herself back into her human form. In her panic Dawn accidentally re-activated the transformation spell AFTER Buffy had carried her into the attic. Wishing that she could at least move on her own, Dawn was pleasantly surprised when her body began moving under her control. So was Buffy, who froze right where she stood when Dawn started approaching her.
