Maybe he should just give up and let the frat do what they wanted to him? He tells the coach he needs to think. A few minutes later he has made up his mind - he wants to become a football player. If that means he has to run again - well, jog - then he's going to start now. He begins to orbit the field - running until he's out of breath, then walking until he has his breath back, then running a little more - until he's done the same four times round the team did. As he coasts off the track, the coach is there, apparently waiting for him.
"So, you're serious then?"
"Yessir," Jason replies, his lungs burning gently.
"Well, you come and keep up the track work every day for the rest of the week, and I'll find you a berth. In the meantime, go over and see our strength and conditioning guy, Ryan, over there. We'll try you out in the weight room tomorrow, maybe join in a scrimmage later in the week."
"Thanks, Coach," Jason replies, feeling really up.
"I believe in rewarding determination," the Coach replied. "You made it all around the field without anybody yelling at you or jogging with you. That shows the kind of grit I like."
