This choice: Johnny wants to talk to someone (big brother Dylan, Dad, class bully Lucas) • Go Back...Chapter #7Johnny want to see Dylan, But First... by: nightwolf285 “I—“ Johnny stuttered, “I think I need to go talk to Dylan.”
“Ok. Then let’s go talk to Dylan.”
Johnny hesitated. “I think I need to go to the next level first.”
Johnny’s wide eyes beamed at Kevin. It was odd hearing Johnny talk like he did before he had self-confidence. “What did you have in mind big guy?”
Johnny blushed. Although this wasn’t the first time Kevin had called Johnny a big guy, this was the first time it had sank in as being reality. Johnny was big, and he wanted to be bigger.
“Bigger?” Kevin asked. He started to pull away, but Johnny held him firm. He didn’t want Kevin going anywhere.
“Yeah. The thing is that my brother Dylan is a huge athlete. I could march in his room right now and tell him how I feel about everything. I know I could.”
“I know you can. I can feel it.”
If it were possible, Johnny blushed even more, turning his cheeks into a deep scarlet red. Despite his confidence and his size, Kevin had a special effect on him in more ways than one.
“I know I can,” Johnny continued, “But if I am not his equal, he won’t listen.”
Kevin twisted his face. “Your brother doesn’t listen to you?”
Johnny knew instantly that he had misspoke. This caused him to loosen his grip just enough for Kevin to step back. Johnny wanted to leap out and grab him again, but now he was flustered about giving Kevin the wrong impression about Dylan. “No, that’s not what I mean. He’s a really cool guy! He’s awesome! He’s usually always smiling. Asks me how my day was. He’s great.”
Kevin felt Johnny’s tension remain. There was something else to it. “So, why do you think he won’t listen to you as you are now? You are a 6’ tall third grader. You’re huge. He would have to listen to you.”
Suddenly, the image of Dylan filled both of their minds. It was all either of them could see. Instantly, Kevin knew what Dylan meant. Dylan was your classic, popular, high school sports star. He was tall, thick with muscle, rugged, deep voiced and had more confidence in one finger than most teenagers would have in their whole lives. Being 6’6” and over 220 with solid, ripped muscle could do that.
“I know that I am so much more than I was,” Johnny continued, “But even I know that I do not compare to him. If I am going to face him, I have to be on an equal playing field. I know he listens to me. But sometimes I kinda feel like he is only half listening. He’s always in-between things. If he’s not rushing off to practice, he’s working out at the gym. One minutes he’s working on homework, the next he’s off to the mall with a group of friends.
“If I am going to get his attention, I really need to get his attention. I need him to drop everything, if only for two seconds, so he can hear what I have to say.”
Johnny had actually worked himself up. He was heaving heavy breaths. They were so heavy that his already strained shirt fought to hold itself around Johnny’s chest. Kevin could swear he even heard threads snapping under the arms.
Kevin refocused on Johnny’s eyes, which were so sincere and large. Johnny honestly believed that he needed an even bigger boost to get his brothers attention. And that was saying a lot, since Johnny was swimming in a level of self-confidence he had never known. Maybe Johnny was speaking from some untapped wisdom that his new found confidence was providing access to?
“Well—Kevin—what do you think?”
