"Dad!" you yell in the house. He comes stumbling down the stairs, as always off in his own world. Frequently you wonder why your mother married him. He might be brilliant after all, but he's almost incapable of social interaction. Something you are actually counting on right now.
"I overheard you earlier- the machine you are building switches bodies right?" You ask tersely, hoping he wouldn't figure out how you knew that.
He nods his head. "It's meant to do that, but I haven't tested it."
"And you were just going to leave it active out there?" You place your hands on your hips like Amber does for maximum effect. "What if Ember got switched with Mom? What if 'Mike' tricked me into the machine and swapped with me? Do you have any idea how bad that would be?!"
He ponders for a moment and says, "you know Amber you're right. I should disable it until I'm ready to test it." Then he wanders out to the shed to take care of things. You smile a little; one performance like that and he not only believed you were the real Amber, he actually was disabling the machine so she couldn't make you swap back. Now, what to do with your new life?
