"Hello?" said my mom. "Conrad, it's your mother, I'm calling from Kuala Lumpur. Your father and I just got back from the expedition, we have so much material for our research! So we're heading back to Hesper in a few days."
"Oh... great!" I said, but didn't feel enthusiastic about the prospect. I had been enjoying having the place to myself, and doing things like the big dinner I'd had last night. I'd found myself hoping, as I woke up empty that morning, that I'd be free to do more food binges like that, but not if my parents were around.
"So, we'll get a taxi home from the airport on Thursday. See you then!" Mom said, and hung up.
I put the phone down with a sigh. I was 18 now, out of high school – I didn't want to go back to being around my parents all the time. Maybe it was time to find somewhere of my own to live – possibly even, I wondered, a job?
I had some money from my parents, but it wouldn't last long – I'd have to find somewhere cheap.
