Chapter #4
Police Hartship
by: Unknown
"What is your name child?"
"I don't..." He became so quiet you couldn't hear him.
"Speak up child."
"I don't have a name. I'm called Tiny."
"I see why...Well, Tiny, my boy, that may be your story but as for you taking that gold necklace. How am I to know you are not the killer yourself? One should know not to take things, has your mother and father not taught you this?"
"I have none such, sir."
"Well, that explains this act. Little orphan boys are thieves and lazy workers." The detective paused to scratch his beard. "But they are not killers."
"So child...tell me what you saw...do you know this woman?"
"I think so sir but I wasn't sure if she was dead...you see, I'm colourblind."
"I see."
"I believe she is the wife of Mr.Hartship, sir."
"Ah, the man who runs the orphanage. Good work, my boy. Now you are done for the day. I want you to run down to Mr.Hartship and bring him swiftly forth. On return I will give you sixpence and two. Now run!"
The boy sped from the police office.
