"Hey," Sarabi called, drawing attention to herself, "get out of here," then charged.
The hyenas retreated when Sarabi charged, then turned when the expected blows of the lioness didn't eventuate, and began to laugh as the turgid lioness drew alongside the injured cheetah. The charge hadn't been long, only a few dozen paces, but it was enough to leave the former queen panting slightly. Sensing a weakness, the hyenas stopped their retreat, and instead began to approach again.
Dealing with three hyenas wouldn't have troubled a lioness in her prime, but Sarabi was far from in her prime, so while she managed to drive the hyenas off she sustained some nasty injuries, including a bad bit on her haunch, leaving it virtually useless.
Once the hyenas were gone, Sarabi turned to the cheetah, and asked, "are you ohhh..." noticing for the first time the bloodstained cub at the cheetah's forepaws, "I'm sorry."
Ignoring the lioness, the cheetah struggle for a moment, but managed to bend down far "enough to nuzzle the cub, but it was obvious, after a few moments, that it was dead. leaving the dead cub, and still ignoring her massive companion, the cheetah limped over to a nearby bush, where Sarabi watched two more cheetah cubs appeared.
Struggling to move her considerable body with only three good legs, Sarabi made her way over to the cheetah, who was embracing her two surviving cub fiercely, then took the head of one in her mouth, and was about to bite down when Sarabi said, "hey."
The cheetah's head shot round and said, "can't you just...oh, sorry, I though you were..."
"Hey, it's okay," Sarabi said plopping her bulk down beside the cheetah, "and you don't have to do that because I can help you."
The cheetah turned her head to look Sarabi over, before saying, "how, because you're a bit, big."
"And don't I know it," Sarabi said, "but I can help you, honestly."
The cheetah looked disbelieving for a moment, then sighed, "well, it's not like I can do anything else is it?"
"Well you could finish your job and die here alone," Sarabi said, "but I doubt that's something you want to do if there's an alternative."
"And what is this alternative," the cheetah asked.
"Well I didn't get this size on my own," Sarabi said, "but I think we'd better get these injuries looked at first."
"And I can bring the cubs," the cheetah asked, "I can't leave them behind, not after what just happened."
"You take one I'll take the other," Sarabi said, "now come on, this is going to take a while so we'd better start now."
