Chapter #4

Carl the Stegosaurus

    by: Unknown
A flamboyant round bone growths strike your eyes. This was a male. A giant male stegosaurus, which you barely reached below his carpus and who was now staring at your (for him) petiful form. You silently stared into his amber eyes, which were big as you, and didn’t know what to do.
The beak of the colossal thyreophora opens and your jaw drops as you hear what you think would be impossible: “What are you?” the stego asked in the voice of a young man, seemingly confused.
“You…” you pointed at the stegosaurus, “...can…talk.”
“Hey, so it was you who was talking before!” the herbivorous dinosaur said loudly in realisation, the sudden blow of air from his mouth sending you a good ten centimetres backwards. You slowly sat back on your rump. Wiping out the spit from your face, you looked at the stegosaurus who was in slight shock when he realised what he did. “Sorry I didn’t realise… Wait, take this!” the behemoth apologised and bent down for a leaf of a nearby plant, bringing it to you between the mandibles in his beak.
You looked at the leaf and then took a brief look at the stego and said nervously: “Thanks” before you grabbed the leaf, using it as a towel.

“I don't know if it is the right time for this…” The stegosaurus broke the awkward silence after a minute, “But I have a few questions for you.”
“Well… You are not alone who has questions, so…”
“Great!” the dinosaur didn’t let you finish, “What sort of creature are you? I didn’t see anything like you. But to be honest, you kinda remind me of those tiny fuzzy egg stealers with those funny feathers on your head.”
You looked away for a moment, before you standed up and replied nervously: “I’m human. And I’m guessing that you mean mammals? By the way, I’m related to those things.”
“Related?”
“Yeah, like you are related to other dinosaurs.” you replied as if it were completely clear.
“Dino- what?”
“Dinosaur, it's a term which my species uses to call guys like you. It means ‘terrible lizard’.”
“Terrible?” the stegosaur made a step back, “For what reason would you call me like that?”
“Like in the meaning of being scary!” you tried to explain, “When we humans first found skeletons of you we didn’t know anything about you. We simply thought that you were some prehistoric monster.”
“Man, I have no idea what ‘prehistoric’ means…” the stegosaurus turned his backside to you, “...But this…” he gently placed the tip of his tail with the four spikes in front of you, with almost gentle effort, “...I have to defend myself. And I’m not a guy who would simply runned around to smash those into someone for fun.”
Looking guiltily at the giant, you sigh and said: “Dude, I don’t think that you are like that. It’s just a term and I can call you whatever you want.”
The stegosaurus turned his front back to you. “That would be nice.” he said gently and then continued in a more friendly tone: “I’m spiketail and my call-sound is Carl.”
“You have a name? In that case: My name is Jack Garrod. But you can just call me Jack.”
“ ‘Jack’ ” Carl tested the name on his tongue, “That is a nice call-sound.”
“Likewise.” you replied - smiling a little bit.
“So Jack,” Carl began talking again, “Before I knocked you out, you were saying something when you were behind me. What was it…?”
Realising what Carl was pointing at you quickly interrupted him when you yelled: “That wasn’t important, forget about it!”
“Really? Like, I didn’t hear clearly what you said because of then you were. But you sounded enthusiastic. Almost like if you made a huge discovery.” The stegosaurus started turning around once again, “Maybe if…”
“Carl no!” you yelled, “As I said it wasn’t important! It was just random nonsense which came on my tongue.”
“As you wish.” Carl replied with a not so sure tone and lied down next to you.

You two went silent, exchanging gaze. After a minute of awkward silence you finally spoke up carefully: “So now when we acquaintanced, what will we do now?”
“Well It’s getting late so I should go before it gets dark. What about you? Are you going?”
“I have no idea.” you said with a sad tone, “I’m not from here and I don’t even know how I got there. I will have to find a new hideout for the night, because you snacked my previous one. But then… I don’t know where I should go.”
“Oh.” Carl replied in sympathy. The stegosaurus then started to muse about something before his expression was filled with merriment. With a happy tone in his voice he told you: “I have an idea! You can go with me!”
“Go with you?” you asked, unsure if he is serious.
“Yeah! Jack, man, look at me!” Carl standed up and started to show off himself to you, “I'm big and full of muscle! And I have those:” he wagged his tail, swaying with his four spikes above you, “I can protect you from predators! And with the others in my herd, you can be safe with us! And I’m sure, Jack, that most of them will love a little critter like you. What do you think, Jack?”

You stared at Carl. His expression full of enthusiasm and his amber eyes glowing like stars by the excitement.
You wondered: You didn’t have a great chance to survive out alone between dinosaurs and other Mesozoic beings, so the fact that one of those creatures offered you protection was a godsend for you. On other hand, you weren’t sure if being around oversized clumsy dinosaurs was safe for fragile and easily overlookable pygmy like you. Also even you could be safe with Carl, the same maybe would not apply to other stegosauruses from his herd.

You have the following choices:

1. Accept Carl's offer

*Noteb*
2. Decline Carl's offer

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
