This choice: Nolan, a quiet, shy, creative red fox • Go Back...Chapter #4Nolan, a quiet, shy, creative red fox by: Unknown "...Nolan Westfield." In through the door walked a fox, standing nearly fifty feet tall; not nearly as tall as Jacques was, but still big enough to pick up Wes without any problem. The fox had a slender build and clean, smooth bright red-orange fur. White spots dotted his face, and his sharp green eyes were lined by a rim of black fur, which made them look very deep and brooding, and were partially hidden by a tuft of fur that seemed to grew down from his head. Nolan was dressed in a half-tucked-in white button-up shirt with the top three buttons open, revealing the brilliant white fur of his chest, a dark brown jacket, and a pair of tight-fitting dark blue jeans. Wes also noticed the dark black fur around his paws which looked a little like gloves (or boots, in the case of the feet), but was all-natural.
Nolan stood in front of Jacques and Wes, visibly nervous, clutching his arm with his paw. "Wow," Wes thought, "maybe he's as scared as I am about this whole mess."
"Nolan, I'd like you to meet Wes Schafer," Jacques said, gesturing towards you. "He is the one you've heard so much about; he'll be living with you for the next year."
Nolan gave a little wave. "Hello, there," he said, his voice slightly cracking. He looked away, embarrassed.
"Hi," Wes said, waving back. "Nice to meet you." There was something about this Nolan. Wes wasn't sure what it was, but he knew that he was going to like this mysterious fox.
"Now, boys, we've made sure that your class schedules for the year are exactly the same, so Nolan, you'll be responsible for making sure Wes gets where he needs to go at first. Understood?"
Nolan nodded, and reached his paw out. "Would you... would you like to ride in my pocket? I've, uh, tried to make it extra comfortable for you."
For the second time in just a few minutes, you jumped on a large paw and held on tight. You expected Nolan's fur to be harsh and abrasive, like the fur of foxes you'd touched back home, but it was surprisingly soft. Nolan must take excellent care of himself, you thought. He lifted you up and placed you in the highest pocket of his jacket, which, sure enough, had some extra cotton packed into it so it was soft and so you could stand and see out of it. You looked over the edge, peeking down at the ground below. It wasn't until just then that the scale of the situation truly dawned on you.
"Okay, boys," Jacques said, "Have a great year at Tailwind High. And if there's anything that I or my staff could do for you, don't hesitate to ask."
With that, Nolan turned away, and walked out of the office. As he headed down the empty halls, Nolan let out a sigh of relief. "Man, I'm glad to be out of there," he said. "I don't know what it is, but being in that office always makes me freak out."
"Well, Jacques seems like a nice enough guy," you said.
"He is, I guess," Nolan says, shrugging, which jostled you slightly. "I guess it's just the power of it all. I always feel like I'm in trouble, no matter what I'm in there for."
"Yeah, I can understand that," you said.
Suddenly, you heard a loud ringing sound fill the halls. The doors to the classrooms flew open, and students began exiting into the hall. "Homeroom's over," Nolan said. "Time for first period."
You pulled out the schedule from your pocket, trying to remember what first period was. As you opened it, you saw that it was going to be... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
