Chapter #4

Birthday Cake

    by: PenSlayer5 Author IconMail Icon
Looking around your room again you see something that wasn't there when you left just a little bit ago. It was... a cake? A small round birthday cake on a plate seated on your bed with one lit candle sticking out the top of it. "Happy birthday, little brother."

Needless to say, you were left stunned. This was the last thing you expected when you woke up today. All you were really thing about before was just making it through the day.

"Mom, Dan and I went out and got it for you last night." Sara explained as she took in your shocked expression. She honestly found it amusing just how wide your eyes could get. They reminded her of a fish at times. "So, what do you think? Do you like it?"

Did you like it? You walked over to your taller sister and gave her a brief hug that momentarily caught her off guard. "Thanks, this really means a lot."

"No problem." She blushed. She felt so embarrassed now, even though they were the only two people in the room and Dan returned to his after secretly lighting the candle for her. She had to remember to tell him thanks for that. "A-Anyway, make a wish!"

"Right." You quickly let her go and nodded. You walked over to the small round cake and thought long and hard for a moment about what you wanted to wish for. Sara couldn't read your thoughts and you closed your eyes before blowing out the candle.

The flame was gone, then returned for a second before you blew it out again. You were about to grab it when the flam came alive once more. Sara started to giggle behind you when you realized that this was a trick candle like the one your uncle used on your tenth birthday. "Damn trick candles. I hate trick candles."

"I know, but mom let Dan pick the candle." Sara continued to giggle. That explained oh so much. Dan wouldn't do anything nice unless there was some kind of catch. At least a trick candle wasn't evil or harmful.

You licked between your thumb and index finger and put the candle out that way. This time it stayed dead. Now that the fun was over, you lifted the candle out of the cake and tossed it into the trash bin in the corner.

"So, what'd you wish for." Sara asked curiously. A part of you wondered if you should tell her or not but what was really the harm in doing so. After all, it's not as if birthday wishes actually came true anyhow.

"Fine. I wished for..."
