This choice: Try on clothes then eat with the team later. • Go Back...
Chapter #6
Showdown
by: Unknown
Becky could wait until the baseball team was back before she ate. It was usually pretty fun hanging out with Josh’s team. She went upstairs to sort through clothes.
Several pairs of her shorts were getting tight. All of these either had buttons or zippers on them. Her elastic shorts and pants still fit fine. She changed into one pair.
Her t-shirts were still okay, but her button-up shirts were taunt. She changed into a green shirt.
Becky sat reading until she heard the door open and the noise of Josh’s baseball team mingling downstairs. It would be time to eat. Becky licked her lips and envisioned the food she saw on the table.
“Becky, you want to come down and eat?” her mother called.
Becky grabbed a plate and sat between Josh and a beefy kid named Kyle. She took a section of the party sub and some chips, and listened to the baseball team as they ate and talked.
“I bet you I could eat eight slices of pizza,” a boy said.
“That’s nothing, I could eat ten,” said Bobby, another player.
“I could eat way more than that,” said Kyle. His less active position as catcher made him a bit thicker than the other team members.
“Are those fightin’ words, Kyle? I’ll challenge you.”
“You couldn’t even beat me on a good day. I once ate fourteen slices in a sittin’.”
Becky spoke up. “I could eat more than that.”
Kyle looked down at her. “You’re just a girl. Besides, you’re five years old and you just ate some of that sub. There’s no way you could bet me.”
“Wanna bet?” she said, trying to do an intimidating stare at Kyle.
“Alright, hold on.” The first kid shifted an uneaten pizza over to the other side of the table. “We’ll do this fair. The three of you start with a piece, and we see who can eat the most pieces in five minutes.”
“Okay.” Bobby, Kyle, and Becky agreed.
“I’ll start the timer… and go!”
The three competitors grabbed a slice and ate. They chewed them down almost simultaneously, and then reached for another. Within a minute, Bobby showed signs of slowing, and stopped after his sixth slice.
“Kyle and Becky are still going at it!” exclaimed the kid moderating. “Someone get them another pizza!”
As they started the new pizza, Kyle got slower and slower in his eating, but Becky actually sped up now that she had a rhythm going. Kyle plopped a half eaten piece of pizza out of his mouth.
“Kyle’s out at twelve! Becky’s still going!”
Becky ate rapidly, and the other kid called time.
“Is she still eating?!”
“Becky, you can stop now!”
“What, over already?” she asked, mouth full of pizza.
