Link had just finished defeating Gohma and was transported out of the Great Deku Tree. There, the Tree explained what happened when he was brought to this forest by his mother. And before she died, she left a necklace for Link, in order for him find a partner in the future. He also explained that he was going to die regardless of the Spiders inside him.
Taking the necklace and putting it on, Link thanked the Deku Tree before it died in front of him. Link took a few minutes to weep for his caretaker, and his mother, before drying his tears and headed back to the village. There, Mido confronted him, with the others gathered as well, as apparently all the Kokiri and Fairies sensed the Death of the Great Deku Tree.
Link did something he never did before and hugged Mido, apologizing for failing to save their caretaker, fresh tears falling again. Navi backed up his story by explaining what the Tree explained to them about his death being caused by a curse, and not by a spider.
Mido, uncomfortable with the hug, patted Link on the back awkwardly. While he didn’t understand the full story, it was clear that Link was not at fault. Saria gently took Link from Mido and led him back home, the other girls joining the two of them.
That night, the girls and Link all held each other as they slept, not noticing the glowing coming from the Necklace. Navi did, but didn’t know what it meant.
The next morning, Link opened up his eyes, seeing confused looks by the girls in his house. Asking what was wrong, each of them claimed to be Link in the girls bodies.
Saria, Fado, and Hidi were each as confused as Link was. Navi appeared, along with the other three fairies, and she explained that Link’s necklace glowed in the night, so that might have something to do with it.
Link did not have direct control over the girls bodies, but a copy of his spirit was in each of the girls, with access to his memories. Link didn’t exactly know what to make of this, but knew they couldn’t leave the forest with him. Not unless he could find a way to prevent them from dying.
So, Saria/Link gave Link her Ocarina as a memento and Link left the forest, saying goodbye to the guys. Even Mido was more grumpy than angry, but told Link not to die out there. Link gave him a thumbs up before crossing the bridge and entering Hyrule Field.
Once he did, he was met by an Owl named Kaepora Gaebora, who explained where he was to head to next and that he was destined for great things in this world before leaving him behind.
Link started out across the path that led away from the forest and towards where the Castle was, as directed by the Owl.
