Chapter #4
Valerie moves in for a closer look.
by: Unknown
Her lightly tanned neck already angling her head downward, Valerie raises her softly petite hand perpendicular to her forehead. Sweaty droplets wet Valerie's improvised visor as she battles against the mid-afternoon sun for a better view of the action at her feet.
As Valerie struggles to asses the situation below, the moral perplexity within her mind is equally difficult. Valerie has been conditioned from birth to ignore the plights of those in the lower classes. The stakes in this particular instance are quite high, however. The young man before her could very well die without aid, and it would be so easy for Valerie to give that aid to boot. Not to mention the fact that this was a prime opportunity to finally meet a different type of person.
Unable to make up her mind, Valerie decides to move in for a closer look. After all, it appears there is still some time before the ants catch up with the speedy poor man. Valerie shifts her legs backward as her upper body makes its descent. She lays on the ground upon her stomach, her moist hands supporting her chin as her entrenched elbows serve as a solid foundation. All she can do now is watch and wait...
...Jimmy was on his last leg. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to "climb the beanstalk". Jimmy probably would have succeeded if he would have even made it further than the grasslands, but that's beside the point. Now Jimmy needed a miracle , not to move up in the world, but just to survive.
"These things are too fast", Jimmy mutters to no one in particular. "They're like small poodles. How am I going to...".
It had taken Jimmy a moment to notice the sudden drop in temperature. In fact, if the world around him hadn't been enveloped in darkness he probably still wouldn't have noticed. This didn't make sense. Nightfall was still hours away. Just what was going on here?
Violent shaking threatens to topple Jimmy in mid stride. Jimmy finally turns his attention away from the area directly in front of him, and quickly realizes the cause of all of the strange phenomenon occurring.
Filling Jimmy's view are two clawed bulldozers dressed in brown leather tearing all of the lengthy green stalks unfortunate enough to be in their respective paths from their roots. Guiding this destruction are two monstrous bridges of flesh stretching for miles as they straighten themselves out. A perfectly flat plain of tan brown eclipsed by two white, independent mountainous regions collided with the ground with amazing speed and power. Two pillars dug themselves into the foreground of this magnificent vision.
Cranking his head upward, Jimmy sees two sparking blue eyes focused on his puny figure as they are surrounded by a lifeless sea of red. Needless to say, this is the last thing Jimmy wanted to see. All his life he had heard the horror stories of what those spoiled rich kids enjoyed doing to poor people not unlike himself. In any case, all he can do is keep running and hope for the best...
..."Well, I think he's taken notice of me", Valerie giggles to herself.
The ants are really starting to gain on this poor stranger. Valerie finds the idea of acting very enticing, but it might be interesting to see if this guy has any of those proverbial tricks up his sleeve...
