"Did you understand the pre-calc. homework today?" Danny asked.
"Not really." Cory answered.
"I did, its really not that hard, I'll explain it to you later," Connor added,"Man, it really sucks that I can't swim, I was for sure gonna be captain this year, but I guess there's nothing i can do about it."
"Yeah, that does suck, I'm not really that sad I'm not gonna play soccer this year. I think our year was last year, and since a ton of seniors graduated last year the team is going to be a bunch of new freshman. We probably won't win state again. So I guess its better to end on a high note," Danny said.
"Yeah, I'm gonna miss wrestling a ton, but I'll still work out and maybe, I can still join if I really do miss it that much 'cause tryout are still three weeks away, but it'll be fun to hang out with you as much as I can." Cory replied.
"WHAT!?!" Connor and Danny shouted shocked.
"I thought you were going to quit so that we could all be together?" Danny stated,"You know cause our best friend Connor can't play."
"It sounded like a good idea at the time to say to make him feel better, but I didn't really think it through, I don't know...I want to quit, i guess...but I'm just not sure, well, maybe I want to..." Cory started.
Connor, interrupting, "No, don't feel bad. I never asked you to do it, and although it was a nice gesture I don't want to hold you back just 'cause I can't swim."
Danny just stared at Cory, under his breath,"Well, I'm not playing soccer."
The rest of the way home was very quiet with the occasional sigh or grunt. Danny was clearly upset that Cory had said this to Connor and was even thinking about wrestling. Danny would often shoot Cory an mean glance or uncomfortable stare.
Finally, the boys came to Connor's house. They went inside and Cory turned to Danny and sharply said, "I'm going to use the bathroom, if that's ok with you Danny. Unless, you have an objection to me running my own life." Danny just stared at him and raised his eyebrows. Cory went to the bathroom and Connor and Danny sat down on the couch and turned on the tv.
"So, are you upset about not being able to swim this year?"
"Uh, kind of, not really I guess. I don't think I would have swam in college. It was just something to do, I already got my letter, but it would have been cool to be captain though; that's the only thing I'm disappointed about. Why did you give up soccer for me? I would have been fine."
"Well, I don't really like playing soccer. My dad just likes me to play sports and that's the best of the worst I guess. Plus, you're my best friend and it's our senior year, we should be hanging out and just having a great time."
"Yeah, it will be great, won't it?"
"Yeah it will!"
Just then Cory came back and said, "Connor and Danny, I'm really sorry if I upset you or made you mad, but this could be my year and I know what I said, and I really do want to be there for you Connor, but I might want to wrestle, that's all. Do you guys want anything to drink?"
"NAH..." both boys replied as Cory walked into the kitchen.
