Chapter #6

The great escape!

by: Michael Jackson Author IconMail Icon
Sophie was carefully crawling on all fours looking for any disturbance in the dirt when Oesca caught her eye, her friend was staring at her and her eye's kept darting back to the grass on the edge of the clearing. Though it was tough to say if that was what she was trying to motion at. Sophie tried to act casual, but she felt terrified. Oesca didn't act like this. She had never known her tomboy friend to act alarmed, even in some of the scariest situations they had been in. Something was there, and it was probably that damn skunk! Why hadn't they listened to Iglis like she thought?! She didn't want to be food! Especially not for some smelly skunk!

Oesca turned her back to the grass, it was a dangerous move, but not as dangerous as letting the skunk know they knew it was there. She had been lucky, catching a glimpse of the white streaked head malevolently glaring at them from the grass, before darting back in. Even luckier, Sophie seemed to pick up on her cues and was playing along. But now was the probably the best chance they were going to get, the stupid thing was probably trying to figure out how to get both of them. "Fly in three... two... one..." Oesca mouthed at her friend, hoping she read her lips correctly. A moment later and she was off, her wings fluttering wildly and pulling her up as fast as they could carry her. She just hoped Sophie was behind her!

Sophie pushed of with all her might as her wings worked double time to pull her into the air after her friend. Her friend who was now looking back over her shoulder in so much terror that it made Sophie do the same. Her blood ran cold as the biggest skunk she had ever seen burst into the clearing after them, it's body jiggling with each bounding jump, as she got higher and higher up. Finally it was almost underneath them, and with one last giant leap, it soared into the air after her.

The skunk was furious, the flying jiggling little snacks must have caught on to it somehow. But he planned on getting at least one of them, the red head, much to her chagrin, hadn't gotten very high by the time he reached them, and with a leap he was hurtling through the air towards her. His mouth wide as he hurtled through the air he knew success was at hand, but just then the effects of gravity kicked in, and his momentum started to bleed away. Desperately he clapped his jaws shut and inch below her feet with a dry clack. As his feet his the ground he still had one last desperate move in his arsenal, turning he lifted his tail and aimed. A well aimed spray would be able to knock a Faerie senseless!
