A young man sat in front of a window which overlooked a street. The room was a combination of kitchen and dinning room. Above a fan whirled lazily on the ceiling. The man was muttering under his breath with his eyes firmly shut. He had been sitting at the dinning table for over a hour. The ride he was waiting for was supposed to have been there twenty minutes ago. They were running late for the sacrifices. Not a good sign. Not a good sign at all. The man just assumed to have it over with already; just a quick gulp and all his problems would be over. This waiting was intolerable.
The man had gotten the letter that he had been selected for sacrifice the day before. The open letter was still on the kitchen counter. The man didn't even see who had delivered the letter. He spent a few minutes wondering just who had delivered the bad news. Perhaps it was a regular mailman. Perhaps it was one of the possessed former heroes. Maybe it was Superman himself. No. It wouldn't be the alien from a destroyed planet. The man sighed heavily as he opened his eyes.
Directly in front of the window looking at him was a raven with four red eyes. The raven looked normal enough despite having four demonic eyes. The sight of the raven didn't startle the man in the slightest. The raven looked at him coldly. The man just sat there for long minutes.
"I'm not running" said the man in a quiet voice. It was unclear if the raven had heard him through the glass. The raven continued to stare at the man unblinkingly. The man just stared back in silence.
"What broke you?" asked the man finally. "I mean you were a hero once, right? What made you like this?"
The raven said nothing and did nothing.
"To tell the truth I wasn't expecting to see one of the heralds of our great demon overlord here at my house. I feel kinda honored"
The raven said nothing.
"I didn't think I merited such a visit, especially from you....or do you make a habit of visiting one of your sacrifices at home? Were you expecting me to plea for my life? To bow before your proxy and ask to replace me with someone else? Are you expecting me to make a break for it? I know that running is useless. I have no chance to hide from your master"
The raven said nothing.
A truck stopped in front of the house. It was a big red semi-truck. It had two long trailers hooked up to it. The man rose to his feet and went to the front door and opened it.
Outside the house was total devastation from horizon to horizon. A few houses were still standing in the neighborhood. Everything was bleak and desolate. The sky was red and had been red for ten long years; ever since the apocalypse had come and gone. There were no trees and no grass; parched earth was everywhere.
The man walked down the steps of the front porch. In that time, a man exited the cab of the truck. From the way the driver was dressed he was a former hero now possessed. The man didn't recognize the hero at all; must be a D-list hero.
The raven had vanished from the porch. It must've flown away but nobody saw it flew away.
The driver went to open the second trailer and opened it to let the man enter it. The man entered the trailer, offering no resistance or hesitation.
The trailer was crammed with people just like cattle. Of course they were little more than cattle now.
The trailer's door was closing when the man saw the raven sitting on the roof of a house four or five doors down. For just a moment, the man could've sworn that the raven winked one of its eyes at him. The man just stared blankly as the trailer darkened as the door slid shut.
The people sharing the trailer with the man were resigned to their fate. There was no hope of being rescued.
It took the truck nearly two hours to navigate the ruined streets to its destination. It seemed that the man -- Jacob Winters -- was the last sacrifice to be picked up that day. On the way to the destination, Jacob met his fellow cattle.
The trailer was far from airless; there were little breathing holes dotted up and down the trailer.
Finally the wait ended. The truck stopped and, moments later, the door was flung open by the driver. The driver motioned for the sacrifices to follow him. Slowly, the trailer emptied as the sacrifices exited it. The truck had parked at a loading dock. Jacob looked around as he entered the building the truck had stopped at to see he had been sent to Metropolis Stadium. Jacob had heard that the city had apparently voted to change the name of the stadium to Krypton Memorial Stadium before the apocalypse. The vote must've failed because the stadium hadn't changed names. Or that there wasn't time enough to rename the stadium.
The sacrifices were led down a series of long corridors by a possessed hero, different from the driver of the truck. Again, the possessed hero was unknown to Jacob.
The group was led to the field itself. The field consisted of cages on the sidelines. These cages were filled with people. The cages were exactly like those in a slaughter house.
On the far end of the field sat the demonic mistress on her makeshift throne. The throne was really the stands of the stadium. The demonic mistress was at least 400 feet tall, towering over all.
Mistress Raven had red skin and had four eyes. The red eyes glowed with a baleful light. The mistress had long black hair that went pass the shoulders. She still had the same face. Raven looked just like the old Raven but something fundamentally changed Raven after the apocalypse had occurred.
Jacob didn't know what happened to Raven that would change her into...this. All that he knew for sure was that a large powerful demon named Trigon had invaded and took over the Earth with the heroes on his side thanks to being possessed by Trigon himself.
Trigon had reigned for two years when he was defeated by Raven. Or, Trigon had been banished from this dimension by Raven. It wasn't known what had happened to Trigon but, it was clear, he was no longer there.
It was Trigon that had destroyed the world. It was Trigon that had insisted of having sacrifices made to him. Trigon either tortured or fed on the sacrifices at his whim alone. Trigon took great delight in breaking humans utterly. Trigon was known for torture more than anything else.
When Raven had overthrown Trigon, instead of liberating the world, Raven had merely continued to maintain the status quo. The world had exchanged one demonic ruler for another. There were many theories as to why; perhaps, during the fight with Trigon, something had corrupted Raven from within. Perhaps, in a last act of an attack, Trigon had did something to Raven to turn her from a hero to a demonic beast much like him. Raven and Trigon were daughter and father after all; Trigon had shared this news during the fight at some point.
Raven wasn't as vicious as Trigon had been. Trigon had mandated that all mankind shall worship him while Raven had made no such mandate. Raven had never tortured her subjects. All that Raven demanded was a daily sacrifice of 1,200 people for herself. Most of these sacrifices were eaten by Raven while it was rumored that Raven would keep people alive for her own amusement.
