Dave was sitting down at the juice bar when up walked a woman he had never seen around there before. She looked to be in her late 30s, early 40s with a slender build and light brown curls. She walked up next to him and ordered a green apple, kale and banana smoothie. Dave told the server to double the order and offered to pay for her drink. The woman smiled. As they sat Dave tried to strike up a conversation with her. He learned that her name was Holly Anderson and she worked as a paralegal at a law firm a block or two from where his office was located.
"Preparing for a competition Dave?"
"No. Just doing some self improvement."
"Self improvement?? What's there to improve? You're already built like a marble statue."
Dave grinned.
"I didn't always look like this you know. See?"
Dave took out his phone and showed her a picture of himself and John on their fishing trip.
"Your son?"
"Yeah."
"Very handsome. Lives with you?"
"His mom. We got divorced a couple months back."
"So sorry to hear that. I assuming that this was the reason for the "self-improvement.""
"Kinda. yeah...."
Holly burst out laughing.
"What's so funny?"
"Would you believe me if I told you that's why I'm here too?"
"What? Just recently got divorced and are trying to get in shape to get back into the dating pool?"
Holly nodded.
"Ok. Nothing wrong with that."
"So. Is it safe to assume that this new ultra ripped version of you is your way of saying, "Fuck you. Look what you missed out on." to your ex?"
"Well, when you say it like that, it sounds so shallow."
Holly laughed.
"Don't feel bad. I'm busting my butt as well to give my ex a similar middle finger."
"Ok. Now I don't feel so bad."
"It's pretty safe to assume that you didn't wave a magic wand and all of that," Holly said, gesturing to Dave's body, "Happened overnight."
"No. I had to put in the hours."
"Hmm. Time well spent."
"So. Holly, do you want to get outta here and -?"
"Whoa!! Slow down there pal! One drink and one conversation doesn't mean you get to sleep with me!!"
"Well no. What I was going to say was would you be interested in being my workout partner since our goals seemed to coincide."
"Oh!! Um, yeah! That's sounds like a terrific idea."
"There are a couple of machines free. Let's get to it."
As they walked toward the weight machines, Dave stopped her.
"So...I was just wondering...is that other thing still on the table??"
Holly turned her head and smiled coyly.
"We'll see. It all depends on how good of a trainer you are."
