"Hmmmm..."

"Wakey-wakey..."

"Muuuuhhh..."

"Eggs and bakey..."

"Huuuuugh....hmmm..."

"GET UP!"

"WOAH JESUS!"

Skander jumped up, hitting his head on his bedside lamp and cursing very creatively. Adrian laughed, "you should've seen your face! Come on, get up, it's time for school. I've seen you wake up late nearly every day this week! Wouldn't hpapen in my day. We'd get our asses caned so bad we'd be standing up for a whole week! Now move it!"

"Thanks for the wake-up call, Adrian..." Skander said. He started changing, tugging on a T-shirt, a jacket and jeans, socks and sneakers. He packed his bag and headed into the kitchen. Plenty of time. Perhaps having a ghost in the house was gonna be a good thing. Skander sat down at the breakfast table where his mother put a plate of bacon and eggs in front of him.

"Oooh that does look good," said Adrian, "I haven't had bacon and eggs in ninety years...Enjoy!"
"Yeah yeah, stop bothering me!" Skander said, "I want to eat!"

"Sorry, did you say something honey?" Mrs. Jones asked, who was preparing her own breakfast.

"Uh, n-nothing mah!" Skander said. "Just um..."
"Oh Adrian!"

Skander looked up. What?

Adrian was floating above the stove, watching the eggs and bacon frying.

"You can talk to ghosts too?" Skander asked.
"Oh sure," said Mrs. Jones, "I wondered how I was going to introduce Adrian to you, but I think you two already met. I think there's a clairvoyant or psychic streak in our family."

"A...what?" Skander asked.
"We can speak to the dead," said Mrs. Jones, sitting down.
"Hey!" Adrian shouted.
"Sorry dear," Mrs. Jones added.

After breakfast, Skander and Adrian walked to school, the ghost floating along beside Skander. He was early enough today that he could walk to school instead of taking the bus. They headed into class and sat down at one of the desks at the back. Jason wasn't there yet. It was double history.

"...Okay boys, take out your books," said Mr. Anderson, walking in, "We're continuing our lesson on World War One, known before 1945 as the Great War. This was the first modern war...Mr. Lancet, you're late."
"Sorry sir," said Jason. He headed down the back and sat next to Skander and pulled out his books.

"...with aircraft, tanks and chemical warfare..."

"Do you feel something?" Jason asked.
"Huh?" Skander replied, "What?"
"I feel cold..."
"Oh...No, I'm fine."

Jason tried to write down his notes. Skander watched him. Then he saw the zip on Jason's pencil-case open of its own accord. A biro floated out.

"Adrian!" Skander whispered, "What are you doing?"

The biro continued to float in mid-air, rotating slowly.

"I never got these newfangled...ball-point pens..." Adrian whispered, "They're so hard to use...I prefer fountain pens..." He put the pen down on Jason's desk and picked up a calculator. "In my day we used BRAINS..."

"Stop it! Someone'll see you..." Skander whispered.
"Who's your friend?" Adrian asked.
"Jason..."
"Cool, I'm gonna meet him."
"Don't!..."
"Hey, I'm a ghost and you're a mortal, you can't touch me, skin-tube."

The biro lifted off the desk and started writing on a blank page in Jason's notebook. The writing was loopy and old-fashioned.

"Hello, Jason." it read.

"Hey Skand..." Jason said, "I didn't know you wrote this neat..."
"It's not me..." Skander whispered.

"...My name is Adrian..." the pen wrote. Then Jason stared at it. "What the!?" he spluttered.
"Don't be afraid...Skander knows me very well. I just want to meet you..."

Jason looked at Skander, whose two hands were on his own desk.

"No way...what..."

"...I'm a ghost...Boo!"

Skander had to grin at this. The pen dropped flat on the desk and didn't move.

"No way..." Jason whispered. "Really?"

Skander nodded. "Let's just say we bumped into each other at home..."
