Chapter #4

The anxious Raven, Anemone

    by: Null Author IconMail Icon
Your brain struggles to reboot as you find yourself staring at the noticeably female figure of the large raven. The anomaly that was the buxom bird reached out to you with a wing-like arm eliciting an uncertain step backwards from your tense body. To your surprise the raven seemed to wilt with your instinctual rejection of her proximity, lowering her left arm and fidgeting with what you assumed to be uncertainty.

"I...I wanted to say thank you for... what you did earlier." The raven said in a sad voice barely above a whisper, her gaze averted.

That tidbit of information was enough to reveal to you the identity of the tall fem. You had given half of an Italian sub to a rather large raven that had taken an unusual interest in your efforts to repair a fence earlier in the day. The bird had been much to anxious to take your offer of lunch from you directly so you had placed the food on a fence post a few meters away from where you were working. You pretended to be busy with the fence to put the bird at ease and it quickly left it's perch in a nearby tree to investigate the sandwich. Curiously, the bird had looked to you for a moment before snatching the sandwich up in it's large beak and quickly swallowing it whole, the bird's shaggy throat feathers bulging unnaturally as the sub passed. You ceased to pretend to be busy as you watched the strange sight, the raven turning to you and giving a guttural rattle in what you assumed was thanks.

The bird must have overcome some of it's anxiety because it stayed nearby on it's new perch for the rest of the time you worked on the fence, only leaving when you did the same.

Your attention returned to the downcast beauty standing before you just inside the barn. Guilt quickly assailed you for slighting the self-conscious raven, driving you to take action. Whatever questions you have could wait until after you make her feel better.

Hesitating only a moment, you took back your previous step and raised your right arm to try and reach her somewhat curved black beak. The difference in height between you and her became very obvious as you craned your neck to try and look her in the eyes as you gently turned her beak towards you.

With what you hoped was a comforting smile on your face, you looked into her brown eyes and said, "I'm glad you liked the sandwich."

You feel elated as you see the corners of her beak curl up into a smile in response.

"My name is Anemone," the raven says as she kneels, allowing you a less strenuous view of her face.

"I'm Zack the farmer," you reply as you continue to smile at the ebony avian. The pleasant moment under the light at the barn's entrance was short lived as a low rumbling grabbed your attention.

Anemone's plumage fluffed up in what looked to you like embarrassment, confirming your suspicions as to were the rumbling was coming from. It seems your large guest is hungry again.

You could stay in the barn and give Anemone some animal feed in the barn.

Or

You could invite the raven to your house for a meal in a more comfortable setting.

You have the following choices:

1. Stay in the barn

2. Invite her to the house
