Chapter #40

The Second Key

by: rugal b. Author IconMail Icon
James seems to notice the turn in your mood because he doesn't even bother to make a move once you've put your phone back. "Something wrong?" he asks before finally trying to grab your hands. "Suggesting that didn't piss you off did it? I know how you can be about--"

"It's not you," you say as you quickly pull away. "It's me. I should've fucking known she'd want to leave sooner rather than later."

"Oh," he says with the benefit of clarity. "Let her stew for a bit. Long enough for us to..."

He trails off as he leans in to kiss you again and you shiver with excitement as his hand moves its way down your side to your waist then lower and behind until he's kneading and massaging your ass. The Bridget half of your mind is incredibly worked up and, though it wouldn't be the first time, you're being urged to find a room to disappear into as your mouths and tongues work harder, faster and more passionately. Just a little time, you think, just give me half an hour. You can do that can't you?

But the thoughts barely come out and your phone auspiciously buzzes again. You don't even need to check it this time. In disappointment you gently push James away.

"Sorry but this kinda takes priority," you tell him. "Besides, it won't really do David any good if Kel has a public freakout."

"Too bad but you gotta do what you gotta do," he says with disappointment. "Really felt like we were going the whole nine yards this time."

Mentally you curse. He felt it too. Sure Bridget and James find each other at a party and spend some time making out and grabbing each other but they've never gone off into a private room before and now just when it seemed like things had finally progressed to that point... of all the luck. But if he's into the idea you don't want to leave him completely hanging.

"You free tomorrow?" you ask.

"Tiff wants to do something for lunch," he answers. "Her treat so I can't really pass it up. What about you?"

"Working the afternoon shift. I get off at six."

"I should be done with her by then."

"Well I've probably got someone I need to talk to after..." But you cut yourself off. Is he suggesting that the two of you meet up tomorrow? "You free at all tomorrow night? You don't have anywhere you need to be?" you ask.

"Nothing sticks out."

"Hey, uh, if you want I can get in touch with you if you wanna... you know..."

His face, that handsome face, brightens. "I'd like that," he says.

"Oh but if we're going to... break up with Tiffany," you tell him. "I'm fucking serious James. Do it right 'cause I sure as fuck am not gonna be your side piece. Also it'd probably be fair to her or something, I dunno."

"I didn't know you cared so much about Tiff's feelings," he replies. "I'll see you tomorrow?" he asks as he leans in for a quick kiss before leaving.

You want to melt. Well Bridget wants to. She's very much into James and has been for a while and she'd definitely do whatever she could to land him. If he wanted her in a dress she'd actually wear one. So you're feeling good as you go back out into the crowd to find Kelly. Though it's until a few minutes later that you realize he never actually said he was going to break up with Tiffany.

You'd found Kelly easy enough in the first place you'd looked: outside in the front. You grumbled and moaned but agreed to drop her off back at her place. You drive in silence on the way there until you finally pull up into her driveway with the both of you getting out. You're not really mad at her -- you'd expected it after all -- but you can't help but be a little annoyed all the same. Which is why you're surpised at how contrite she appears to be regarding it.

"Sorry, I saw you go off with James and I know you like him and all but," she sighs.

"It's whatever, don't worry about it," you respond trying to defuse any potential tension. "I'll probably head back. Maybe I can find him again."

"It was Jeremy," she says without prompting. "I saw him with that cheerleader he hangs around with and I just, I don't know, I got really fucking upset."

Well that makes sense and it certainly dampens the annoyance you'd been feeling. Kelly doesn't really hide her crush on Jeremey Richardson, the same basketball player that you used to be friends with what seems like a lifetime ago.

"I get it," you reassure her, "especially since you'd just saw me go off with James and all."

"It was Stephanie too," she says more bitterly. "I ran across her and I know she saw me but she just... just ignored me like I hadn't... ugh!"

Stephanie, in this case, refers to Stephanie Wyatt, another person that you have familiarity with. She's the virtual, if not technical, captain of the girls' basketball team because she tends to act so bossy that people find it hard to push back. Certainly that's what she'd done to you in elementary school and it's what she did during varsity and JV try outs during the summer.

Kelly, from what she'd told Bridget, wasn't expecting to make the varsity team but thought for sure she was good enough for the JV team and was really hoping to impress Stephanie. But Stephanie herself seemed to have a certain idea regarding the team and told Kelly she was too much on the small side to get a place on the team.

You find yourself feeling a lot more sympathetic as you walk up with her to her front door. Probably because Bridget is naturally very protective of her best friend.

"Hey, you know I can stay here if you want," you tell her. "We can just hang out."

"You don't have to do that," she insists.

"It's fine. There's gonna be more parties."

"And I'm saying don't worry about it, jeez," she replies more forcefully. "I'll read a book or something. You don't need to baby me."

"Kel, I'm not babying you I swear. If you wanna hang out--"

"Bridget. Please," she says as she places a hand on your shoulder. "I like that you and Blake look out for me but I can function on my own. Just give me a little bit of space and go back to Catherine's?"

You regard her for a moment before giving her a friendly -- sisterly even -- hug. "Sure," you tell her. "I don't know when I'll be free tomorrow but we'll do something this weekend. That cool?"

"It's fine, see ya."

Once she's back in you head back out to Catherine's to continue things. You have no luck running into James but you do see plenty of Stephanie around, hanging out and chatting with her friends, and though you say nothing mentally you sneer both because Bridget for obvious reasons doesn't like her and because it reminds you of your own experience with her.

But aside from her you're able to sin back into Bridget's personality and when you come across some of her other friends the group of you (including a few juniors) are able to polish off that twelve pack you'd nabbed from her brother.

* * * * *

"So that makes sense right? About belief and the way these work?" Sydney asks you the next morning. You were out too late last night and because of your afternoon schedule the only time you could really meet her was for brunch at her place. "Are you even listening Will?"

"Yeah, I was listening," you insist. "You draw a box on a wall, hold the magic wand, imagine real hard and your demon godmother appears to turn you into a real princess so you can go to the ball. That about right?"

"Please take this seriously," she shoots back. "But yes that's, I guess, more or less what I said. That's what was in my dad's notes. That belief, mental focus and a doorway are what's needed for Baphomet to enter into this world."

"And then what? What happens when he does?" you ask; Bridget could not find this type of stuff any dumber if she tried which is coloring your own attitude. "Does he take over your body? Does the world end? Does he do a little dance and then jet?"

"I don't know," she admits sheepishly, "but that's part of what makes it interesting right? That we'll be exploring the unknown like this?"

"Sure," is all you say.

"Anyway, what about you? You got a feel for Kelly right? We've still got masks so we can make a move on her whenever you're ready."

But are you ready? More importantly do you want to? This may also be Bridget's mind coloring your thoughts but after last night you're suddenly a little more loathe to the idea of using Kelly for something so petty. Bridget knows him very well and Blake, loathe as you are to admit, probably isn't the asshole you assumed he was and she would be 100% against the idea of using Kelly for anything, ever.

Of course Bridget's not in control of anything, you are, but you still can't help but feel sympathetic towards her which is also a cause for hesitation.

Besides, being Bridget is fun because Bridget's a fun person. You enjoyed yourself last night, being the type of person who flows in and out of conversation easy; who people gravitate towards. People like James Randolph. If you were looking for more Brotherhood members someone like him would certainly make a good choice and you may have the opportunity tonight to get him.

And maybe you could give his mask to Sydney to wear or, you shiver excitedly, you can wear it and give her Bridget's. That way you could date with little issue.

Through all that though, something else from last night is on your mind. If you're feeling less ire towards Blake than you were someone new has emerged to earn and both your mind and your borrowed one are in agreement about it: if you should target anyone it should be Stephanie Wyatt. Do it through her friends or hell just get a mask on her and make her a recruit. Either way it'd be a nice little act of revenge both for you and for Kelly.

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. Keep to the original plan

*Noteb*
2. Get a mask on James

*Noteb*
3. Target Stephanie

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
