You catch up to Russ during fifth period and tell him that you forgot you had another commitment and won't be able to hang out with him and Justin after all. It's a relief to break the date, but it does tick you off to see that he doesn't seem to mind.
If you're going to go over to the Paks' afterward, it's best to make a "playdate" with Sarah, but she has track practice after school, so you just go home. When you get there, though, you discover that Mary has come back unexpectedly early.
She is in conference with your parents, who shoo you away. It's not hard to see why. They are trying to protect Joanna as much as they can from learning too much upsetting stuff about your disappearance. Upstairs, you plop onto the bed and play around with some of Joanna's stuffed toys. You also pull out her private journal and glance through it, but there really isn't any point in reading it.
Your day as Joanna has left you feeling a little annoyed. You can still try making a go of living as Joanna, but you're more inclined to think that Mary would make a better home. You had fun in high school, but the thought of repeating the whole experience again leaves you feeling pallid. Mary, though, is in college.
