His lovable pet Labrador Buddy, padded towards him, and leant against him, trying to tell him something.
"Are you hungry, Buddy?" Luke asked his dog. Buddy responded with a low whine, and Luke tensed.
"Shh, buddy, keep quiet. I'll get you some food. And Luke opened up another cupboard, pulling out one of the many cans of dog food.
Grabbing a fork, he prised open the ring-lid, and scooped half of the can into Buddy's bowl, which the Labrador dug into almost immediatly.
Luke picked out four more biscuits from the packet, and slowly munched through them quietly. He picked up the half-full can of dog food, and replaced it in the cupboard, but just as he closed the door, something caught his eye. Another, half-full can of dog food, from earlier.
'Oops, Mum's going to notice two open cans.' Luke realised, and tried to think of a solution, eating some more of the biscuits as he pondered. Finally, he came to the conclusion that he would have to feed buddy the rest of the can, that way, no one would notice.
Luke tipped the rest of the food into Buddy's bowl, and the dog paused for a second, and looked up at him in the gloom of the night.
"Go on, eat up Buddy," Luke whispered to his dog, and Buddy resumed eating. "Good boy Buddy, that's it," encouraged Luke quietly, and stroked his dog's tummy and side, feeling the smoothness of the fur under his fingers. As Buddy ate, Luke stood up, and walked back over to the counter top where the packet of biscuits was. Picking up the packet, he noticed how light it now felt, and felt the side of it, counting five biscuits left.
'Bugger,' he thought, 'she's going to notice this too.' Luke remembered what he did a few minutes ago, and finished off the remaining biscuits. He placed the empty wrapper and dog food can in the bin, gave Buddy one last scratch behing his ears, and retreated from the kitchen.
He quickly and quietly negotiated the stairs and hallway, before ending up back in his room. After one big yawn, he plopped down into his bed, and pulled the duvet over him. His hunger now sated, his hands rested on his belly, now slightly firmer than before his 'little snack'. Luke closed his eyes, and drifted off to sleep.
