Max had first been walking through the park when he noticed it, the sudden grating feeling in his hips. He felt it for a a few paces before it stopped; but a few paces later, the feeling returned. Max endured the pain until he got home before he flopped on the ground. Max's owner was a single lady of about 50, who was a fitness buff and as in shape as possible. But Mable was a sweet lady, who cared dearly for Max and pretty much let him have his way.
Mable free-fed Max, whom she noticed only ate what he wanted and was otherwise a healthy weight. She had gotten Max from a man whom she now knew was a puppy miller; but she hadn't known that when she had gotten him. Nevertheless, he was a sweet, kind dog who had never taken advantage of her kindness.
When Mable called to Max to serve him dinner, she heard the familiar clatter of nails on hardwood, but followed by an audible "pop." Mable had never heard this before. Had Max hurt himself or was that just a result of his lying down. But she heard the noise again, so she decided to call the vet to discern the cause of this noise. It was a ghastly noise which made Mable cringe for her dog.
When Max indeed had risen, he felt the familiar pain in his hips as he walked toward his food bowl. Feeling to tired to stand up to eat, he lay down and began eating. The food felt good and seemed to cause the pain to subside considerably. Mable had never seen her dog lie down to eat before, so she called the vet and scheduled an appointment for the next day.
Max was given couple of treats to give him a shot for an x-ray, which the vet promptly took. Having deliberated for a few minutes, the vet returned and told Mable: …
