Chapter #4

A good enemy

by: Ace of Kings Author IconMail Icon
That one meeting was the birth of Killer Croc. It started out as a one time thing, but one thing lead to another and soon Waylon Jones had become the thug for higher Killer Croc. He used his wrestling name because it inspired fear and he used that fear to become a legend. Stories of Killer Croc spread through Gotham like wild fire, each telling made them more and more outrages. People began to think that he was a 20 foot tall sewer monster that could jump out of toilets and drag his victims into the sewers to eat, and every crime lord in Gotham wanted to higher him. At first it was tough for him to carry out the different jobs he was asked to do, but over the years he was able to push the guilt aside and looked at each theft, shake down, and kill like he did when he killed a deer, it was just a matter of survival nothing more. Even when it came to Batman who he faced and lost too many times over the years he never tried to gain revenge.

With all the money he made he was able to higher Sally the best teachers for home school, the best treatment for her condition, any toy she could ever want, a library worth of books. The only thing he wouldn't buy for her was a TV or an internet connection for the computer for fear that she would see his face on the news and find out why he would disappear for long periods of time, or why he would hide and let Father Bryan do all the talking when her teachers, sitters, and doctors were around. But as Sally got older she got more curies about the world out side their swamp, the books and magazines her father brought home were nice but they just made her want to visit those places even more. And she asked her father or Father Bryan about his job and why he would come home with bruises or sometimes he wouldn't come home at all, they would get all quite and would say it was adult stuff.

After 10 years of crime and blood shed Waylon Jones had enough. It was on Sally's tenth birthday when he reached that decision. He had just escaped yet another battle with the Dark Night and was swimming back through one of the water ways that lead back to their swamp. He couldn't take it any more, he was tired of having to hide from the cops, from fighting Batman and the other superheroes and villains, of having to lie to Sally about his job or why he was gone for months on end when he was imprison. But the worst part was how she would always forgive him and tell him that she knew his job was important. Just weeks ago she told him she figured out his job, she thought he was Batman. The very idea that his own daughter was the Black Knight when in reality he was one of his most dangers foes was too much. That night he was going to his daughter and all the money he had saved up and leave Gotham forever.

But he never got the chance. He made it out of the drain pipe and swam to the clearing that his cabin was in. When he saw that the lights were still on he smiled, he may have missed a few things in his daughter's life but he had never missed a single birth day. He began walking to the cabin when all of a sudden Batman fell from the trees behind him and "Halt!" in his ice cold voice. Normally Waylon would try and kill the Bat on sight, but not here, not in front of his daughter. Here he was Waylon Jones, Sally's father and hero, not the legendary Killer Croc. So instead he throw him self to Batman's feet begging him to show mercery. This was the last thing Batman expected to see from one of his most cunning and skilled foes. Bats always suspected that Croc was not the monster every thought he was, after all the only people he ever killed were ether crime bosses that he was paid too, or people that attacked him first. Yet he also knew Croc was a cunning and ruthless foe who could appear and disappear in ways similar to the Dark Knight, the only reason he was able to track Croc down was that for once he was able to get a tracer on his harden skin.

But nearly all of his doubts about Croc's honesty went away when he saw what appeared to be a scared ten year old girl peering out from behind a door at her father battered and bruised begging for mercy. He looked down at Croc and said, "I will let you go but on one condition. Tomorrow Gordon will come to pick you up and drive you to the police station. There you will tell him everything you know about your employers and then you and your daughter disappear. Forever! Understand?" "Yes Batman. Thank you!" Said the desperate father.

And with that the Dark Knight disappeared into the shadows and Waylon walked to his cabin were his little girl was waiting. And when she asked her father who was that he turned to her and said "A good enemy."
