"Well...I..." I stammered, confused as how to answer. Connor had a glint in his mischievous eyes, like he already knew, so I didn't see the harm in telling him. "Yes," I muttered.
He shook his head with a grin. "You MUST be new, if you don't know what's going on between Percy and Annabeth. Trust me, it'll be better for your health--and probably all of ours--if you back off." But he looked grudging, like he didn't really like what he was saying. I studied him for a few minutes because I thought I knew what was going on. One of my friends, back in Miami, was this really huge practical joker. I mean, he loved to play pranks on people! Then he got in trouble, because people told him he needed to grow up. So he stopped, but he was always on the lookout for an opportunity. Whenever he found one, he got this look on his face, exactly like the one Connor had right now...like he had trouble deciding whether to take the chance or not.
A ha, I thought. "Come on, Connor, I really like her. But I don't know how to get Percy away! I mean, he's good at a whole bunch of stuff. But I want to beat him and make him look bad. It would be really funny..." I put on my most pleading look. "Would you help me?"
Connor looked frozen with indecision. Just as I thought--this guy was a prankster, and a big one at that. "I don't know," he began. "It wouldn't really be right. I don't think I should do this..."
