Wasting no time Gary headed over to the ticket booth to check for supplies before heading out. At this point he'd be thankful just to have a drink or a weapon, even a small switchblade would make him feel a little better about heading back outside. As he walked over to the booth he heard some flies buzzing and immediately felt sick to his stomach when he noticed a splatter of blood on the interior of the booth.
As he peered over the counter he came face to face with what had once been a desperate man who was now a near headless corpse. Half of his face had been taken off from a point blank blast of buckshot from a small hunting shotgun sprawled across his lap. The model was fairly old and worn judging by the wear and tear on the stock and the barrel was sawn off to make for a bigger spread. It was no long range weapon, but it would shred anything that got within ten feet.
With a sigh Gary tore off a bit of cloth from his undershirt and used it to make a makeshift face mask to protect his nose from the smell as he walked around to the door of the booth on the other side. It was locked from the inside, but that mattered very little when the window was completely shattered. After reaching in and springing the door open Gary found himself standing over the mangled corpse of what had once been another survivor.
The guy wasn't dressed like a first responder or soldier, just some random person in a jacket and jeans who had found some gear before getting cornered or losing the will to live. On a shelf next to him was a small box of shells for the gun, mostly empty but with a few left inside along with a roll of dollar bills, which were now worthless. Aside from the cash the guy also had a small canteen with maybe an once or two of water left in it and some personal items like a wallet and keychain.
"Well, thanks for the gun and the drink friend." Gary whispered sadly as he popped the lid off the canteen and downed the liquid inside, which turned out to be fruit punch... not water like Gary had hoped. Oh well, it should keep him hydrated at least, though the fruity aftertaste would be a bit annoying. After loading the shotgun Gary took a quick stock of his remaining shells as he put them into his pocket.
In total he had six more shots after he expended the one he had already loaded into the chamber. The shotgun was a single-shot model, but that would help conserve ammo at least. Gary would just have to be smart about when to pull the trigger and pick his fights carefully. At any rate, he was feeling much better now and could finally head back above ground to see what the damage was. With a deep breath he walked out of the ticket booth and began ascending the stairs that would bring him back up to street level.
Unfortunately, things had gone from bad to worse while he was gone... very worse. The streets were littered with blood and gore that was splattered across abandoned cars and vans and several dead bodies were twitching and crawling about. Some were just torsos with gnawed limbs, others were little more than mangled heads rendered immobile after losing their arms and body and a few... were still up and walking around with large chunks torn out of their flesh. It was pure hell on earth, the stuff of nightmares.
"Merciful god..." Gary mumbled as he began walking out of the subway station and down the street. As he was about to round the corner a group of people with glowing red eyes stumbled out from behind an overturned semi truck and began closing in on him. There were less than half a dozen of them blocking his way but there was no way around them, if Gary wanted to continue forwards he'd have to either fight them or find another way past them.
