"It's time to bug out."
The seatbelts clicked out of place and reeled back up to the corners of the car and gently rested up against the wall. Jack and Helen opened the back doors and both excitedly hopped out of the car with their backpacks in hand, they walked over to the curb and stood beside the drivers door and looked at their Mother.
"I can't believe you two are growing up so fast!" Julie smiled at her children from the drivers seat, she cranked the window down and leaned out of the car, licking the tip of her finger and wiping a stain on Jack's school shirt. "It felt like yesterday you two went to kindergarten, I'm happy proud of both of you. Remember: Be polite. Remember to smile and do what the teachers tell you."
"We will!" Jack and Helen happily responded in unison.
"I better go before I tear up," Julie blinked, holding back her tears. "I don't want to embarrass both of you on your first day at school. I'll pick you up by the gates at three-thirty, sharp. Make sure you keep all of your pencils and rubbers together and try and make a good first impression."
"Mom!" Jack rolled his eyes. "You're embarrassing us!"
"Oops," Julie giggled. "Sorry, honey. Just remember-"
"Mom!" Jack groaned.
"Alright, alright," Julie continued to giggle, twisting the car keys, she revved up the car and placed her hands on the steering wheel. "I love you. my little honey bunnies."
"Goodbye, Mom!" Helen happily waved as the family car picked up in speed and drove away until it disappeared from view. "I can't believe we're not going to kindergarten any more. I bet we will find some new friends! And... And... We can learn how to play new games! What if our new friends have some cool toys? The big kids always have the better toys! Isn't that right, Jack?"
Jack didn't respond at all. Helen looked up and noticed her brother standing by the side walk looking up into the sky. He partially shielded his eyes with his hands, ignoring everyone around him.
"Jack?" Helen walked over to her twin brother. "What's wrong?"
"H-Huh?" Jack broke out of his concentration and looked at his sister. "What?"
"Earth to Jack!" Helen exclaimed. "You're looking at the sky!"
"I know!" Jack frowned. "There's a strange thing in the sky."
"Where?" Helen asked.
"Over there!" Jack lifted an arm up into the sky and pointed at a bright circle that radiated a bright white colour that pierced through the sky. "It's a space man!"
"Space man?" Helen blinked, shielding her eyes from the bright light.
"Daddy told me about the men who go into outer space! That's gotta be one of them!"
"Why would the space man shine a bright light at us?"
"I don't know," Jack shrugged. "Maybe he's trying to say hello to us?"
"Wow..." Helen continued to look at the anomaly. "A space man said hello to us... I can't wait to tell Mom when I get home."
Without a warning, the bright light in the sky suddenly blacked out. All traces of the strange white light had disappeared, leaving both Jack and Helen confused.
"Where did it go?" Helen asked her brother.
"I don't know..." Jack looked back at the ground.
"Aww," Helen groaned. "That was so cool."
Before the two could continue, the sound of the school bell ringed throughout the complex, causing the surrounding children to stop what they were doing and quickly head towards the main doors.
"Oh no," Jack yelped. "It's the bell! We've got to get to class!"
"Class!?" Helen exclaimed. "I'm so nervous!"
"Don't worry!" Jack held his sisters hand. "It's only school. What's the worst that can happen?" indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
