Mira checked her repeater-rifle again before turning the corner. She and four others had been sent to a place the general referred to as “The Facility”. Hidden in a dense forest and known only to the highest links in the chain of command, the Facility supposedly was working on new weapons for the ever increasingly bloody war. However, something went wrong and no reports had come from the Facility in weeks. Only in desperation was Mira’s team sent to investigate.
The Facility stretched downward nearly two thousand feet into the soil, completely hiding it underground. The entrance rooms were only eight foot squares with six feet diameter tubes descending to the main parts of the Facility. The Facility itself was enormous; the rooms were cubes two hundred feet on each side with tunnels at least 100 feet wide leading to similar rooms. These huge rooms and tunnels were likely for missiles and other weapons the Facility was developing; there was another network of rooms and tunnels of smaller size including labs, barracks, mess halls, and recreation rooms.
Mira felt uneasy, no matter where she looked there was nothing. No dead bodies, no signs of life, nothing but her and the dim lighting of the tunnels.
“This is unit 019, report.” A voice ordered from Mira’s communicator.
“205 reporting. I’m in the power control room, nothing out of the ordinary.” Another voice crackled, Mira adjusted the frequency on her comm to pick up her squad mate’s signal better. 205 was the deepest down in the Facility, at least as deep as he could go since the lowest level was strangely sealed off.
“098 here, the barracks are clean. But it’s odd, nothing’s been moved, it’s like nothing’s happened.” A third voice chimed in.
“This is 186, I don’t see anything wrong where I’m at.” The fourth and only other female of the group reported.
Mira tapped the talk button on her comm, “157 reporting in, I’ve got nothing.”
“Acknowledged squad. We’ve covered everywhere we can, let’s head out and report to the general. Maybe he can get us access to the lower levels.” 019 said.
“Right away sir, I’ll- wait! What was- HOLY SH-” Mira heard 205 shout before static burst out the comm’s speaker.
“205 come in. 205 do you read?” 019 shouted.
“It’s no good sir, we’ve lost all contact.” 098 said.
“Damn, alright 186, 157, rendezvous at Lab 17 then start looking for 205. 098 stay where you are and I’ll meet you there, then we’ll do the same.”
Mira acknowledged before heading off, keeping close to the walls for cover.
