Renee blinked, her eyelids sticking together slightly with dried tears. A shiver ran down her spine as an icy breeze stole into her room, rattling the blinds over her window. The pale blue light of the full moon filled the room with shadows from the trees and gave everything an ethereal glow as it made its slow ascent into the sky. A thin white mist danced over the grass, creeping over the cobblestone steps of the garden as it crept out of the nearby forest like some otherworldly creature's tentacles emerging from their lair.
She could hear the familiar sound of Jenny's cat meowing at the bottom of the stairs, telling the world to stay away. The muffled sound of snoring drifted through the wall that divided her room from her parents', and the rest of the house seemed silent, only broken occasionally by a creak or crack as the house settled in the chilly night. From downstairs, the sound of the old grandfather clock chiming 10'O'clock broke the stillness of the night, its echoing chimes sounding faint and distant as they filtered into her room.
Renee blinked a few more times, rubbing the sleep from her eyes as she glanced at the empty page of the notebook, now stained slightly with a hint of drool from her unexpected slumber. Her pencil was nowhere to be seen on the surface of her desk, having rolled away from the tween as she relinquished her grip in exhaustion while she slept. Her hair was a mess, eyes puffy and red from her afternoon nap. Renee let out a quiet yawn as she attempted to fight off the vestiges of sleep that still clung to her mind.
Renee turned on her lamp and stared at the page in the notebook. Tiredness clung to her mind, and she wanted to go back to bed, but the paper was due first thing in the morning. If she tried to work now, however, her thoughts were likely to wander and she would lose focus. Renee rubbed her eyes again and sighed before deciding that it might be better if she finished her English paper instead of trying to get back to sleep. There was no way her grade could survive another late paper.
Renee yawned again as she scanned the surface of her desk for her pencil. The clock on her bedside table showed it was past 10'O'clock, which meant she had slept for over four hours. There was a faint possibility that her friends were still at Stephany's house, though there was no way she'd finish her paper in time to join them, even if it was only a single page long. A single tear rolled down her cheek, and Renee brushed it away. She didn't want to cry anymore, and wasn't sure she understood why she was. She knew there would be other parties to attend, and she'd even see her friends at school the next day, but at that moment, it seemed as if the world was conspiring against her.
Lately, it felt as if her emotions were all over the place- jumping from happy, to sad, to excited, to lonely, all in the course of an hour, and often with no provocation or reason. Her mother had explained that it was a normal part of growing up, and yet it seemed to affect every part of her life. It was like her emotions were on a rollercoaster, and she never knew when they would suddenly change.
A sudden growl escaped Renee's stomach, sounding thundering in the quiet of the sleepy house, and despite being alone, Renee felt her face flush in embarrassment. Quickly, Renee resumed looking for her pencil, trying to distract her mind from the fact she'd missed dinner and had eaten nothing since the sheet of cookies before she fell asleep. She slid off the chair, searching the floor in the dim light of the lamp until she finally located her pencil. A smile spread across her face and she plopped back down heavily in the old wooden chair.
Renee stared at the empty page of her English essay, her mind briefly imagining that she was staring at a pizza instead, and she sighed. She had to get her mind off food, but no matter how hard she tried, all she could think about was the empty pit in her stomach as it let out another loud growl and cramped in hunger.
Renee shifted in her chair, her shirt pulling tightly against her breasts as she unconsciously leaned forward, the sensation of her stomach tensing more with each passing moment. Her mouth watered as she thought of the pizzas she'd missed at Stephany's house, and the roast beef she knew her mother had been preparing for dinner down in the kitchen several hours ago.
She looked at the page again, then put the pencil down on the desk. The paper would have to wait until tomorrow morning now that her hunger was dominating her mind. Renee tilted her head back against the old wooden chair and rubbed at her eyes before getting up slowly and heading towards the door to the hallway as her stomach let out yet another growl.
The lamp on her desk flickered briefly as Renee walked over to the door, the old wooden floorboards creaking under her weight, and for a moment, a faint thought flashed through her mind about how much weight she'd gained in the last few months. However, she didn't care. She was hungry, and that was all that mattered at the moment.
Renee opened the door with a soft click and padded nearly silently down the wooden hallway to the stairs that led down to the kitchen. Dark was the hallway, the only light coming from her open door, and even that quickly faded behind her as her feet carried her to the stairs. Quickly, Renee's hand grasped the wooden banister so she wouldn't trip and sprain her ankle as she felt for each step with her feet as she descended.
A few of the stairs creaked under the weight of the chubby tween as she slowly descended into the darkness. Two pinpricks of light shone from the bottom of the stairs, watching the plump girl as she pussyfooted forward. A small mew escaped the lips of the unseen cat and the lights disappeared.Renee was certain she could see a faint shadow move towards the kitchen, silently slinking away, hoping to receive a late-night meal from the hungry girl.
Renee finally stopped when she reached the bottom of the stairs and found herself in a large kitchen with shiny steel appliances and worn wood flooring. Her eyes traveled across the room as she tried to adjust to the dark, the only light coming from a window near the sink and the sliding glass doors that led to a small porch that overlooked their enclosed backyard and the forest beyond the fence. Renee didn't even have time to wonder what might be out there before her stomach growled loudly once more and reminded her where she really wanted to be.
Instantly, Renee's face flushed again from embarrassment at how loud it had sounded in the night's silence, and instinctively she glanced back up the stairs, waiting to see the face of one of her parents or siblings peeking from their door to identify the source of the sound. However, the house remained still. The sound of her heart pounding in her chest seemed unusually loud in the quiet of the sleeping house. The gentle ticking of the grandfather clock created an almost hypnotic sound, echoing in from the living room, just out of sight.
Renee took a deep breath, quieting her beating heart and turning her attention once more to the kitchen. The soft hum of the refrigerator mingled with the almost silent sound of the dishwasher doing its job while the family slept. Renee stepped forward, her bare feet cold on the old wood, though her eyes remained locked on the cupboard that was her goal. Inside would be chips, candy, cookies, and almost any form of junk food one might desire, and Renee desired it all.
Renee reached out a hand and closed her fingers around the door handle to the cupboard, feeling for a moment as though she couldn't move. Doubt flowed through her body, racing from one corner of her mind to another. In its wake was an uncertainty about what she was doing, what she would do if someone caught her, and how much of a mess she would be in if they did. Finally, Renee pushed down on the handle and pulled open the cupboard door.
Her eyes seemed to grow wide as shelves of junk food filled her view. Her mouth salivated, and she practically bounced with excitement. Renee giggled softly at the thought that she had more junk food supplies in one cupboard than most of her friends had in their entire houses. As Renee reached to grab a package of cookies from one of the higher shelves, her shirt rose up and provided a magnificent view of her plump muffin top peeking over the waistband of her jeans before she pulled her shirt back down with the other hand.
Renee quickly grabbed a handful of cookies and shoved them into her mouth. She consumed more than half the package before she even had time to enjoy the taste. Still, one bite had her hand shaking with desire for more. As the plump girl chewed and swallowed, she reached up on her tippy toes and grabbed at another package of cookies, her shirt again riding up to expose her recently gained weight. Within seconds, the first was gone and Renee's hand eagerly dug into the second.
Renee wasn't able to hold back a moan of pleasure as she grabbed a third package of cookies and shoved them into her mouth. Renee's eyes were glassy with unshed tears when the last package disappeared in less than two minutes. Despite this, Renee continued to dig through the cupboard for her next morsel, her gluttonous hunger clouding her judgement and causing her to grab whatever she saw first.
Time slipped away, and Renee allowed her gluttonous desires to run rampant. She consumed snack after snack, hardly paying attention to what she was actually eating. Twinkies and sweet tarts were devoured almost as soon as she found them. Bags of chips were consumed like breathing. Renee was so engrossed in eating that she failed to notice the creaking of feet on the stairs behind her.
