Chapter #6

A promise of a reward.

by: Scifiwizard Retired Author IconMail Icon
I sat up in my bed, rubbing the sleep and tears from my eyes, and looked around my room. It was small, plainly decorated, with a large mirror covering almost a quarter of the wall to my right. I knew it was a reverse mirror, a window for my captors to keep an eye on me. On the wall to my left was a dresser mirror combo and a small closet and a door which led to a small washroom. Across the room from my bed was a closed, locked door; the only way out. Under the reverse mirror was a number of toys and games, on the floor, given to me for past jobs well done; they all meant nothing to me, I wanted my younger sister, Aura to be safe. I buried my face into my hands to silence the cries of the hundred victims I had help slay in my year as their puppet strategist.

I have a rare ability they called 'Psychic Clairvoyance'; the power to see through the eyes of other people, know what they know and, to some extent, control their bodies. I do not need to see that person to do this, a photograph will do as long as that person is within my range. Jon, my 'master', has the ability to manipulate the nervous system and has used it to increase that range several fold, though it gives me a headache later. I have tried to see through his eyes, searching for Aura, but his ability blocks me from 'getting in'. On the bright side, my own ability allows me to block him out as well, if I so desired. Jon knows about my power but not about the ability to control a person's movements. I am keeping that a secret as I try to hone that skill, I intend to use it as a trump card when it is my time to escape. Until then, I and Aura were prisoners of the Agency. “Please... Please, someone help us, can anyone hear me!?"

I paused, hearing a knock at the door. This was new to me as no one had ever knocked before, they merely entered. "Tommy, are you awake?" firmly, a deep voice asked.

I recognized the voice as my 'master' Jon. "Y- Yes, I am awake." pulling myself out of bed, I called back.

A buzz and a click was heard before the door opened and Jon entered the room. He was tall and muscular with short light brown hair and copper green eyes. He wore a black business suit and black dress shoes. He turned his gaze upon me and again surprised me by giving me a slight smile. "Ah, you just woke up, good." with a courteous tone, he said. "Get dressed, we are in for a treat today."

"A treat, sir?" walking into the washroom, I asked. "Dare I ask what this treat is?"

"You and I have been personally requested by the CEO of the Agency." with a hint of pride, Jon replied. "I can only imagine that this is due to our perfect track record."

"Yes, sir." trying not to sound depressed, I said.

"Now, cheer up." his voice still courteous, Jon said. "Do well at this meeting and I will you allow a two minute telephone conversation with your little sister."

That got my attention as Jon never offered such a prize for a job well done. "This must be very important to him." moving quickly to get ready, I thought. "I better be at my best if he is to honor that promise."

I was clean and dressed in a black suit of my own in under five minutes and Jon led me out of my prison bedroom, down the hall to the heart of the Agency complex. Their headquarters, as far as I could piece together was a vast underground facility, originally used as a nuclear bunker during the cold war. Now it served as the United Europe Orphan Placement Organization. It was the Agency's cover to allow them to do their work undetected. The UEOPO (pronounced yo- po) was an internationally funded foundation that sheltered and provided homes for orphans no one seemed to want or know existed throughout Europe and beyond. That was the cover story; in reality, they searched Europe and beyond for uniquely talented children and teens to be used as their soldiers in their quest to influence their world to their liking.

"Do not speak unless you are spoken to." in a deadly serious tone, Jon instructed. "The members of the board do not tolerate any insubordination; I have seen them kill a twenty year veteran for merely speaking out of turn."

I gulped then nodded, indicating that I understood as we reached two large doors. In front of them were two heavily armed guards who opened the doors for us. "They are expecting you, gentlemen." flatly, one said.

Jon and I nodded then entered a spacious room to find a number of well dressed but serious faced men and women sitting, around a long table. "Welcome Jon." a man at the head of the table said. he then nodded at me. "Tommy."

Again, we both nodded and the man motioned for us to take an empty seat on either side of him. We immediately did as told and the meeting began.

"Tommy, I am the CEO of the Agency, the people before you call me Alpha but you may only address me as 'sir', is that clearly understood?"

"Yes, sir." quickly, I replied.

Alpha nodded then pushed a thick folder in front of me and another in front of Jon. "You are to both study this while I brief you and the others on this mission." he said.

"Yes, sir." I replied.

Thus the meeting began.
